The challenge is real and the chase is fair in spectacular settings in Alabama, where Wingshooting has become the most popular sport in the state. Because of excellent and highly ethical management programs concerning wildlife conservation, deer management, wildlife property and timberland, an abundance of wildlife, both on land and air bound are to be found by eager hunters. Enough food and other resources keep the animals in prime condition.
The discipline of wingshooting was developed as a sport in the mid-seventeenth century, which qualifies it as a modern sport in the bigger scheme of things. The original wingshooters were referred to as fowlers and the birds of prey were shot with a fowling piece (old-fashioned version of a shotgun). This sport has gained unprecedented popularity over time and it is truly a tradition worth carrying forth.
To shoot a bird in full flight in the sky with a shotgun is an enormous challenge and one of the most difficult things to do in hunting. Consistency from season to season and year to year, being spoilt for variety as far as species are concerned, magnifies the problem to unexpected ...
... proportions. Birds to shoot include wild turkeys, quails, doves, and pheasants.
It is much more difficult to become a paramount hunter using a shotgun rather than a rifle. Wingshooting gives the hunter the opportunity to hit a moving target with a shotgun, making it an instinctive decision, rather than a calculated one. By using a shotgun and shooting at a moving target, there is no time to adjust, recalculate, or correct mistakes. There is literally seconds between the flutter into the sky, and to aim and fire.
Because so many things can go pear shaped and usually do, the best advice would be to practice on clay targets at the shooting range. Practice makes perfect, but it takes thousands of hours to perfect this particular skill. Make sure to hit the clay target, because if that is missed, the bird will definitely get away. If the grip is too tight, there is no proper lead, the load passes in a vacant space or the speed, angle and distance is miscalculated, then the bird is gone.
The grip should be just right, not too tight or loose. The trigger hand should signify a friendly shake of the hand. Roll the thumb over the top, and then at the point of fire, squeeze the trigger. Cradle the forearm gently and comfortably.
The gun is pushed toward the target and out by the forearm hand. With the trigger close to the face, all that remains is to stay focused with the target in mind. See the shotgun bead without adjusting your eyes and shift your weight to the front foot while leaning into the gun.

When shooting overhead the weight moves to the rear foot, whilst the forearm hand moves toward the body. The shotgun should be in a comfortable position.

It is of utmost importance to get foot and body position aligned, which is extremely challenging in the hunting field. Preparation time for the shot is key. The front knee needs to be bent while the rear leg needs to be straight. Right-handed shooters should be aligned to 11oclock for left and 12oclock for right foot. For the heavier shooter, a square-footed approach will be more conducive.

The trick to connect the pellets with the moving target whilst they both travel at different speeds differentiates the good from the mediocre shooter. The bird flies at 40 mph while the pellets travel at 800mph. The hunter’s skill should be matchless while using the swing through technique.

While following a smooth path the guns aim which is first place d behind the target in motion. The shotgun is moved through the flight path. The barrel muzzle, used as a rangefinder, sweeps the moving target from the sky. For closer range the trigger is activated as the muzzle passes over the targets head. For longer range the pull of the trigger is delayed until after the target passes. The key to success remains practice and more practice.
