If you're looking to understand the different types of excavations that may be required in any given real estate development project, this article is for you. We're going to cover the difference between commercial and residential excavation, as well as some of the common types of development projects that are tied to each.

There are two kinds of excavations that are common in real estate development in Sydney: commercial and residential. These two kinds of excavations differ in terms of their size, purpose, and duration.

Commercial excavation is usually much bigger than residential excavation. A commercial site might be cleared to make way for a major building like an office tower or a shopping mall. Commercial sites can be large enough that they require high-capacity equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, and diggers. In some cases, commercial excavation may involve working with hazardous materials or toxic waste.

Residential excavation, on the other hand, is typically smaller in scale and scope. ...
... It may involve digging foundations for new homes or moving earth around to lay out roads for a subdivision. The equipment used for residential excavation is often smaller than that used for commercial excavation, and it may not have to handle the same kind of heavy-duty workload.

Two Different Kinds of Excavation
We've been doing this for a long time, and we've learned that different types of excavation require different types of equipment and different approaches. Before you can figure out how to do something, it helps to know what it is you're trying to do.

So, without further ado, here are two of the most common kinds of excavation that happen in real estate development.

Horizontal Excavation
This type of excavation moves all around the project site and involves moving things horizontally to create space for whatever is going in the ground. This happens often when building a basement or a garage. The size of the space will dictate how much material needs to be moved and how long it will take.

Vertical Excavation
This type of excavation in Sydney digs straight down into the soil. It's used to create foundations for buildings and other structures, such as retaining walls and swimming pools. Depending on what's going in the ground, this kind of excavation may require more planning than horizontal excavation. This isn't necessarily because vertical excavation is harder; it just means foundation projects often have more requirements that need to be taken into account during planning and execution.
