Traveling can be hard for people with mobility issues. They have to be careful while planning the destination, packaging, carrying mobility aids, etc. Basically, they need a proper checklist before they leave for a vacation.

With all the mobility aids we have these days, it is much much easier to travel and enjoy. You just need to keep a few things in mind before planning and while going on a vacation. Let’s find out what these things are and start preparing your checklist.

Research Your Destination Well

On vacation, you might be visiting places for the first time. It can be zoos, beaches, museums, parks, etc. But it is essential to research the places you are going to visit. You can google or call the places you are planning to visit to ask them what facilities do they provide for people with disabilities.

You can ask yourself a few questions that will help you figure out what points you need to consider.

- How will you reach your destination?
- Are these places wheelchair or scooter friendly?
- Do they have ramps?
...
... - How can I make the most out of this trip?

The next thing to consider is whether you are going by your own car or by bus, train or airplane. Because the mode of transportation will decide what things you can carry and what not. For example, if you are traveling by car, you can carry your own mobility aids and their accessories with you and enjoy all the places. But if you are going to take public transport then you can also rent these aids at your destinations.

Consider Your Needs and Make a Checklist

While traveling, keep an open mind. It is not necessary your trip will go as planned. Always be ready for challenges and have a backup plan. What if some palace is closed due to unexpected reasons or, say, some part of your wheelchair breaks? Don’t let these small challenges ruin your trip. Execute your plan B. Now, based on what you will require for a few days while away from home, prepare a checklist. This list will help you pack and ensure you don’t forget important things.

Medicines: Take all your medicines as per the number of days. You can also take medicines for a few extra days in case there is any change of plans.
Clothes: Pack clothes in pairs so that it is easy to access from the bag. Check the weather forecast of your vacation days and pack accordingly. Choose clothes that are comfortable to wear on a wheelchair or scooter.
Books: If you read daily, you can add some books to your bag. It will help you kill time while traveling.
Bottle: Don’t forget to keep a water bottle with you to quench your thirst while roaming around.

Mobility Equipments

Now the essential part for any disabled person while traveling is carrying mobility aids with you. For example, you have a scooter for mobilizing. You can carry with you mobility scooter accessories to make your ride smooth and restful. Here we have listed a few accessories you can carry while traveling.

Battery Charger: You must carry a battery charger to charge the battery of your scooter or wheelchair. You can also carry an extra battery with you if you need replacement. Thus, mobility scooter accessories are the first thing to add to your bag.
Ramp: Portable ramps can be handy when there are no ramps for your wheelchair or scooter to pass.
Umbrella: If you want to save yourself from rain or sun, you can attach this umbrella to your wheelchair or scooter.
Seat and Back Cover: This will make the seat comfortable and keep it dry while you use it for longer hours.

Wrapping Up

Don’t let the disability factor hinder your wish to travel and take vacations. With little planning and research, you can have the best trip ever. There are a few travel agencies that are dedicated to travelers with disability. You can contact them as well if you have certain reservations traveling alone.
