A sampling system's goal is to extract a representative sample from a flowing fluid stream regularly in order to assess its constituent qualities.

In the case of a two-phase fluid stream, the Sampler and related collecting system must account for the relative proportions of the immiscible constituents, such as water in crude oil, in order to avoid biassing the sample in favor of one constituent.

Let’s get to the two variants of insertion samplers.

Electric Insertion Sampler

The insertion sampler is designed to fit into a 2 inches full bore flanged isolation valve on the main pipeline to be sampled or directly connect to a 2 inches NB pipe nozzle flange. The sampling mechanism will regularly take a 1cc sample through a flow-through port on the sampler stem.

The sampler is essentially a metering pump that is powered by electricity. A tubular stem with an inner concentric capture tube and a piston makes up the proprietary sample mechanism.

Each cycle catches a precise volume of a sample before pumping it to a sample collection receiver ...
... via a back pressure valve. The sampler has a maximum speed of 15 grabs per minute.

Pneumatic Insertion Sampler

The sampler is essentially a metering pump that is powered by pneumatics. The turbular stem along with the inner concentric capture tube and a piston serves as the sampling mechanism.

Each cycle begins by capturing a specific sample volume and then pumping it to a sample collecting receiver with a back pressure valve. The sampler has a maximum speed of 30 grabs per minute.

Further, insertion samplers are typically utilized on low-pressure pipelines when there is enough head full room for extraction and insertion. The sampler can also be installed in a non-vertical position.

In a correctly built system, the in-line sampler will take representative samples at a pre-determined rate that is generally proportional to the pipeline flow rate.

For lab examination and reference, a composite of the 1,000 to 10,000 grabs collected during a pipeline transfer gives a representative sample of the oil batch.

The most common application is for sampling crude oils and associated production fluids like NGL and refined products for water content, light ends, density, and sulphur analysis, to mention a few.

In final words, both the insertion samplers are equally important. Procuring them from a trusted source is also necessary. OGSI offers the finest insertion samplers. They are known as the best crude oil insertion sampler manufacturer.
