The oxidation catalysts are used to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide by supplying oxygen in the opposite direction.An oxygen sensor is also near the catalytic converter, and it tells the car’s electronic control unit that the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gases.This allows the engine to provide the converter with enough oxygen to complete the oxidation process, that allows the vehicle to run with more efficient air/fuel ratio.

As previously indicated, there are two types of main catalysts that can be used in a discharge system to manage certain gases: reduction and oxidation. There may not be a reduction catalyst installed, depending on the vehicle’s age and the kind of catalytic converter used. The catalytic converters are classified into two categories:

Two-way - The two-way catalytic converter was used in automobiles long ago in the United States of America. The oxidation catalysts are present, which aids in the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The unused hydrocarbons are converted into carbon dioxide and water.

Three-way - The three-way catalytic converter has been used from a long time. The inclusion of a reduction catalyst,functions in similar manner to the two-way converter.This is used to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen gas.

The two-way catalysts are used in diesel engines, and the converters are specifically engineered to deal with diesel exhaust. These engine race catalytic converter attempts to target particles known as soluble organic components. These are formed from soot hydrocarbons.
