The Top 3 Electric Cars For Petrolheads

Want to go green but can’t give up the nice drive? Or need something a little more showy than a SmartCar?
You won’t be the first, and certainly not the last. In fact, when surveyed, one in seven drivers said that their reason for not buying an electric car was simply because they hadn’t seen an EV that they really wanted.
But it’s ok because there is now a wide range of electric cars on the market! Here are a collection of the best electricity-powered drives for committed petrolheads.
Will you see ‘The One’ for you?
1. The Best Of Both Worlds: Porsche Taycan (From $82,700)
The Porsche Taycan is the ultimate EV for petrolheads. While you will never get the same ‘roar’ with an electric vehicle that you would with a petrol car, the Taycan more than makes up for it with a top speed of up to 161 mph, and a 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds on the Turbo S model.
The Taycan has a two-speed gearbox, which enables it to have a higher speed. While most EVs don’t have a line of cogs, the Taycan uses low and high-speed gears to help reduce energy consumption and increase ...
... its highest speed.
While it isn’t as quick to handle as the Porsche 911 (simply due to its enormous size), it is a very smooth drive and easily handled around tight corners.
It is very much a sports car, however, and as such the inner space is somewhat compact. As such, this is a great indulgence for a sports car enthusiast, but not what you would call an ‘every day’ family car.
2. Splash The Cash: Audi E-Tron GT 2021 (From $99,900)
If you’re a racing fan, you will love the Audi E-Tron GT. Inspired by the classic Audi racers of the past, the Vision GT skilfully mixes classic appeal with futuristic tech, creating a beautifully smooth design with just enough bite to spark your interest!
The GT rivals most petrol supercars, and even many dedicated petrolheads have had their heads turned by its eye-catching designs and smooth handling. This vehicle boasts a 0-62 mph time of just 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph for the entry-level version, and 3.3 seconds and 155 mph for the RS E-tron GT. The car is also light and agile, and has the perfect handling for track racing.
If you want to go ‘all green’ with your new eco-friendly car, you can choose to have it upholstered in eco-friendly fabrics, including Dinamica (an Alcantara imitation) and Kaskade (wool imitation), both of which are made from recycled materials.
For a sporty car, the E-Tron is also remarkably practical. Being a five-seater, you can get your whole family inside, while the 405-litre boot space is perfect for shopping trips.
It comes with a 360-degree camera and remote parking assist (although you would hope that any driver going 155 mph would be able to park), while it also has a range of 298 miles, so it’s a practical little EV to get around in.
For those who want something a little different, it is also available in Carbon fibre from $140,000. If you can afford to splash the cash, why not treat yourself!
3. The More Affordable Option: Tesla Model 3 ($45,000)
The least-expensive Tesla on the market, the Model 3 does an excellent job of being a star-quality, affordable electric vehicle option. The Model 3 Long Range covers as much as 374 miles, and has a saloon design with a deep trunk, making it a great, practical choice for single drivers and families alike.
The interior of the car itself is a work of art. The inside of the car is expansive, and the panoramic windscreen makes the interior beautifully light and fresh. Meanwhile, the long sunroof allows more of the sun’s rays to trickle in as you glide down the motorway!
The dash is minimalistic, containing only a touch screen, which creates the illusion of even more space. As such, it is a luxurious drive.
The exterior can also be described as minimalistic. It’s perhaps not as showy as the Taycan or the E- Tron GT, but it is sleek and classic, with smooth - but not overstated - curves on the back and sides, contrasted with a more softly angular shape on the front. Overall, it is a nice-looking car, and one that will continue to look good for years to come.
The Model 3 has a top speed of up to 161.6mph and a 0-60mph of 3.5 seconds for the Performance model, making it a fun and nippy little car, although maybe not as high powered as some of the other options on the market.
Overall, it is a very comfortable drive, and ideal if you’re a driver who does a lot of motorway cruising.
