Banarasi silk sarees are the Indian sarees that originated in Varanasi, commonly known as Banaras. It is one of India's most beautiful sarees, and has been known for their beautifully woven designs interwoven with motifs representing India's rich past and culture, symbolizing its richness. Because of the engravings and complex motifs, these sarees are made of silk and are higher in weight. These beautifully crafted silk sarees enjoys regality and marks the presence at weddings, celebrity occasions, religious festivals, and more, with its genesis profoundly steeped in India’s artistic expressions. A single saree might take anything from 15 days to half a year to be made, depending on the complexity and labor involved.
The history of the Banarasi saree may be traced back to the Puranas, where the Gods, especially noted and valued this silk type. The narrative of how banarasi silk sarees for weddings gained popularity and how they are still ornately created and worn in a variety of designs is found in texts of history, where the Mughal emperor Akbar fell in love with the fabric's smooth and shiny quality. He was so taken ...
... aback with banarasi silk that he had it tailored and fitted into all of his garments and furniture. With the Mughals demanding silk carpets and curtains, many Muslim weavers arrived in Banaras after determining that the city was suited for expanding their textile weaving business. It explains why Mughal themes and designs may be seen on the banarasi silk sarees created for weddings. Another fascinating feature of banarasi sarees is the jailer, a traditional string of leaves that runs around the edges of the sarees. This finely interwoven silk fiber work, embellished with floral and leaf like designs, is both an art and a distinguishing feature of banarasi sarees.
Banarasi silk sarees come in a variety of styles.
If you assume that banarasi silk sarees are only beautiful fabrics with gold and silver embellishments, you couldn't be more wrong. Different varieties of banarasi sarees still exist today, depending on how you choose to define them.
There are mainly four types of Banarasi sarees- based on the design:
• Pure silk or Katan
It is a simple silk fabric woven with glossy and pure silk threads that is transformed into beautifully gleaming sarees. Handlooms that were formerly used to weave the sarees have been replaced by industrial looms.
• Shattir: This is the most common and abundant found material used to weave banarasi sarees, and is also the most sought after fabric for creating the special banarasi saree patterns.
• Organza: These are an elaborately designed and richly woven fabric with skillfully produced designs and patterns. Weavers attach the zari on these banarasi silk sarees by weaving gold-coated silver threads around silk yarn.
• Georgette: If you don't want to wear the heavily embroidered, heavy banarasi sarees, you may choose for a modern variant like georgette sarees, which are simple, light, and easy to weave.
There are mainly four types of Banarasi sarees- based on the design
• Jangla: Banarasi sarees made with colorful silk threads are very popular among women. Jungle sarees, are said to be one of the earliest types of Banarasi sarees. The designs of these sarees differ from those of the common banarasi sarees as these have motifs and designs based on the Jangla nature themes. As they differ from the other banarasi saree variants in terms of pattern, these sarees are distinctive.
• Tanchoi: These are vibrant silk yarns with unusual crisscross designs and Zari borders.
• CutWork: This is the cheapest variety of banarasi clothing that the any individual can afford to purchase. These sarees are made with a blend of cotton and silk fabric, having a unique cutwork made on a plain textured cloth, similar to jamdani styled sarees. Popular floral themes seen on these sarees include jasmine, marigold blooms, creepers, and leaves.
• Tissue: Tissue sarees are the lightest and most delicate sarees you may wear for any event, including gatherings, religious celebrations, and wedding celebrations. Because of the lightness of the fabric and the brilliantly decorative motifs, they are now the most popular banarasi silk sarees used for weddings.
