OCD also known as obsessive-compulsory disorder is a condition in which individuals have recurring, obsessions, ideas or thoughts that makes them feel obliged to do something repetitively. The recurring behaviours such as cleaning, checking on things, and washing hands can drastically get in the way of individuals daily social interactions and activities.

A lot of individuals without obsessive-compulsory disorder have repetitive behaviours and distressing thoughts. But, then, on the other hand, these behaviours and thoughts do not come in the way of their daily life. However, those people that have OCD suspect or know that their sensations are not real, whilst others may believe it can be true. Even if a person that has OCD are aware of the fact that their sensations/obsessions are not real, they find it hard to separate themselves from these sensations or stop their obsessive actions. These compulsions and obsession can have a grave effect to function at work and home.

Often individuals that have OCD try to overlook the fact that they struggle with obsessions and compulsions. Unfortunately, that only enhances ...
... the feeling of anxiety and distress since they feel obliged to execute compulsive actions to alleviate their stress. Despite the hard work to pay no heed to or remove the bothersome urges or thoughts, they keep recurring. At the end of the day, it causes more ritualistic behaviour patterns.

People with obsessive-compulsory disorder often focus on specific themes, for instance, an extreme concern over getting infected by germs. To reduce this risk, they will wash their hands constantly until they are chapped and sore.

If you have obsessive-compulsory disorder, you might feel embarrassed or ashamed about your condition. Luckily, there is some help available to assist you with your problem and many therapists will support you on your journey to a better you.

OCD normally includes both compulsion and obsession. However, it is also possible to have only compulsion or only obsession symptoms. You might or may even become conscious that your compulsions and obsessions are unreasonable or excessive. If truth be told they can interfere with your work or school functioning, social life, and daily routine.

Just to explain, OD obsessions are recurring unwanted persistent thoughts, images and urges that are disturbing and lead to anxiety and distress. Even if you try to overlook them or get rid of them by doing compulsive rituals or actions, they can have an effect on your daily life.

OCD compulsions on the other hand are behaviours you repeat because you feel driven to perform. It can be mental acts and repetitive behaviour to soothe your anxiety related to your obsessions or even counteracting something bad to happen. Unfortunately, OCD compulsions only bring temporary relief for your anxiety and offer no pleasure at all.

You may compose rituals or rules to follow to assist you in having power over your anxiety when you have obsessive thoughts, however most of the time these compulsions are not realistic and excessive and will not fix the problem you have.

Normally OCD starts in adolescence, but in some cases even as you as childhood. In the beginning, the symptoms will start gradually and as people grow older tend to vary in severity. By admitting you have a problem in early life, seeking the assistance of a qualified therapist that specialises in OCD you can lead a normal life.

There is no shame in visiting a therapist when struggling with OCD. Thus if you find that your compulsions and obsessions are affecting your quality of life, seek help.
