A Guild Of Zelda-likes
The Legend of Zelda series was one of the first examples of Nintendo establishing the way for large-scale, even non-linear adventures that genuinely made the player feel as if they were entering an unfamiliar land to discover all of its mysteries. All of the screen-hogging markers, item checklists, and cascading objectives were dropped to acheive pure exploration and discovery.
While there aren’t many games as well-known as The Legend of Zelda, there are plenty of others with open worlds, fascinating monsters, and hidden nooks and crannies that are just waiting to be discovered. Let’s take a look at 5 such games that feature enormous swords, maps, shields, explorative adventures, or all of the above. While they may not be Breath Of The Wild, the following games will undoubtedly scratch a similar itch.
1. Psychonauts 2
The first series of Psychonaunts could also be included here, but the sequel outperforms the 2005 original in practically every way. Psychonauts 2 was crowdfunded in 2015 and took six years to complete. But it was well worth the wait, with a variety of platforming, ability learning, and ...
... environmental puzzles that would make any Zelda fan’s head spin!
Psychonauts
Storyline
Razputin Aquato, a trained acrobat and a powerful young psychic, has finally accomplished his lifelong ambition to join an international psychic espionage organization known as the Psychonauts.
However, these psychic spies are in danger because since their boss was kidnapped, he hasn’t been the same, and to make matters worse, there’s a mole at headquarters. Raz must utilize his abilities to stop the mole before they carry out their plan to bring the terrible psychic villain Maligula!
2. Darksiders Series
Take wonderfully designed post-apocalyptic landscapes and fantasy regions, blend them with some of the industry’s finest art direction, and you’ve got a gripping combination that puts a stylish take on The Legend of Zelda genre. The Darksiders trilogy is a beautiful homage to classic Zelda games, but it’s the action-packed focus that makes these titles stand out. Each game, which is caught between the forces of Heaven and Hell, has its flavor of fighting, puzzles, and mystery to explore, with the main three games being a heart-pounding blast of dungeon-crawling and monster-slaying.

Storyline
The series is set in a fictional setting based on the Christian Bible’s Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The setting features angels, the undead, demons, and other fantastical monsters. There are also post-apocalyptic aspects, as the games’ concept is that humanity has already been wiped out by the apocalypse.
A conflict breaks out between Heaven and Hell in this story set in modern-day Earth. War, one of the Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen, arrives on Earth amid the struggle as the Charred Council accuses War of destroying the balance and causing the apocalypse. Therefore, War pledges to hunt down the true perpetrator, so he’s sent back to Earth, where 100 years have passed.
3. Dark Souls
Dark Souls has a reputation of being difficult, but it’s also what a dark 3D Zelda game could feel like in many aspects. The game is jam-packed with mysteries, like artificial walls that you won’t see until you smash them with your weapon, big, heart-pounding boss fights that feel half-fight, half-puzzle. So if the fighting in Zelda felt a little unrewarding at times, try Dark Souls and see how it feels once you’ve defeated your first boss.
Storyline
The main story occurs near the end of the second Age of Fire when humanity is cursed by an undead curse linked to the Darksign, a symbol on their body. Humans that are afflicted with the undead curse keep resurrecting after death until they lose their minds in a process known as “hollowing.”
The protagonist is a cursed undead imprisoned in an undead asylum. The player travels to Lordran after leaving the asylum to ring the Bells of Awakening. Kingseeker Frampt is awakened by the bells and instructs the player to go to Anor Londo, the Gods’ home. Gwynevere teaches the player in Anor Londo to succeed Lord Gwyn and fulfill the prophecy.
4. Death’s Door
Death’s Door has Zelda-style hack-and-slash action and exploration, where you would tear apart your foes with a sword, a bow and arrow, and magical abilities. You will also get plenty of large-scale boss battles, just like the Acid Nerve’s previous work on Titan Souls.
Death’s Door
Storyline
The player takes on the role of a small crow who works as a “reaper,” gathering souls for the Reaping Commission Headquarters, a bureaucratic afterlife that looks like an office. Inside the game’s first mission, the player is assigned to collect the soul of a monster who refuses to die willingly. After fighting it, a huge, ancient crow intervenes and grabs the soul before informing him of a possible conspiracy involving other crows’ disappearance.
