Questions To Ask When Hiring A Professional Digital Marketing Agencies
Today, there are so many different digital marketing agencies out there it’s almost impossible to know which one you should hire to get the most out of your marketing budget. In order to help you choose the best digital marketing agency, we’ve put together a list of 10 questions you can ask each agency during the interview process to help you determine which agency is right for you and your business. These questions will help you get as much insight as possible into how qualified they are and how they operate on a day-to-day basis.
1) How will you monitor my campaign?
A professional digital marketing agency will be able to clearly describe how you will be monitored throughout your campaign, and what you can expect from them. If there are specific questions you have about your campaign, now is an excellent time to ask them! The last thing you want is for an agency to run with your project without letting you know how things are going or if they need any help from you. This is also why it’s important for both parties (you and your agency) to establish clear goals for your company. You both need something measurable ...
... that you can use as a way of evaluating success at various points during the process.
2) What type of results can I expect?
Different agencies will have different processes. Some professional SEO agencies create detailed web-based reports on their progress, and some do more informal communications. What you should expect from your agency is clear communication about what they're doing and results, be it conversions, clicks, or impressions. (This question can apply to every type of service provider, including social media marketing.) Pay attention to how transparent they are in answering your questions about why and how things work as well as how you can get involved in helping them achieve results. You want an experienced professional who respects your knowledge of your business – otherwise, it's not really your digital marketing strategy. An agency that starts making decisions without asking you may just be making choices based on assumptions rather than facts. And that's not good for anyone's bottom line!
3) What will you do when something goes wrong?
If something goes wrong in your project, what will you do? That’s important because there will be times when things don’t go as expected. You can’t just assume that everyone is right all of the time, or that there won’t be hiccups in your campaign. So you have to ask yourself what you would do if something does go wrong, who you would contact and how you would fix it. The more detailed you are with these questions, the better.
4) Do you use reputable technology partners?
Every professional digital marketing agency is going to tell you they use quality technology partners. But don’t be fooled—not all are created equal, and not all will give you what you need in terms of results. You want your agency’s tech partners to have real expertise in paid search and email marketing. They should have experience helping companies similar to yours achieve specific goals, too. Their portfolio of success stories can be helpful here—if they don’t have any, that’s not a good sign! Be sure you ask questions like: What is your experience with similar clients? How did they get results? What is your process for achieving results?
5) What is your experience with social media management?
A good digital marketing agency will be at least somewhat familiar with social media management. If your agency is new and has no experience in social media, look elsewhere. Social networks are consistently evolving, so you need an agency that can adapt quickly—especially if your brand is already established and is trying to regain its online presence. It’s important that your agency not only knows how to use social media effectively but also understands all of its intricacies, including best practices for posting and analyzing results. If they are using outdated strategies like running contests or building email lists, you’ll probably want to shop around again. You should also ask about your agency’s Twitter strategy; you may be surprised by what they say!
6) What specific skills do you have in my niche or industry?
You’re not looking for an answer like we have all these great skills, but you do want an honest assessment of your agency’s capabilities. If they can demonstrate direct experience in your niche or industry, that is ideal. You might also ask if they can prove their knowledge by including some examples of specific campaigns, programs, or efforts they have led or participated in. Either way, you are getting evidence that they understand your unique challenges and what it takes to succeed in your space. You may find that you have more confidence than ever in working with them now!
7) Who will be handling my account, and how long have they been with the company?
Once you’ve identified the type of professional digital marketing agency that makes sense for your company, it’s time to go out and start talking with top SEO companies. While you don’t want to feel like you have an interrogation on your hands, taking the time to find the right fit can be the difference between success and failure in your digital marketing campaign. Here are some questions you should ask: Who will be handling my account, and how long have they been with the company? What do they specialize in? How many clients do they work with at any given time? How many client-provided services do they provide versus self-developed content/services? What is their creative process like? Are they involved throughout all aspects of the campaign or just some?
8) Can I meet the team managing my account face-to-face?
Meet with them first and get to know their history. If you don’t have time for face-to-face meetings, do so over Skype or Facetime. How much experience do they have?: Have they ever handled campaigns similar to yours? Do they specialize in your industry or topic area? Are there any agency alumni you can contact for references? Can I speak with existing clients of yours?: Talk with someone that has worked with your prospective agency before and ask for their honest opinion about their service and account management. Do they understand my business goals?: Make sure your provider takes into account all of your goals, not just those related to traffic, conversions, or lead generation.
9) Can I see examples of similar projects you’ve worked on in the past?
Even if you’re working with an agency that doesn’t have an existing portfolio for you to see, it’s still worthwhile asking about examples of similar projects. You might ask the question in different ways (Do you ever work on projects like these? Have you worked on any similar projects in the past?) and take note of how the agency responds. No two businesses are exactly alike, so if they don’t give clear answers, chances are they aren’t familiar with your industry or niche.
10) Is there anything else I should know before making my decision?
One of my favorite parts of my job is taking a topic and breaking it down into easily digestible information. It’s nice when I can put myself in someone else’s shoes and try to walk through their experience. If you are getting ready to make your decision, there are two things I want you to know: This isn’t an easy process by any means, but it’s worth it in the end. You may find yourself cycling back and forth between agencies for various reasons. And that’s totally okay!
