The cold winter months have finally rolled around and most parts of the country are enjoying the cold crisp weather. Those situated in warmer climates, are either missing out on the fun or traveling to colder parts of the country to enjoy the weather. In fact, traveling during the winters is always a good idea. For starters, it is usually too hot or rainy to travel during other seasons. Additionally, winters are fairly mild in most parts of the country making this a good time to indulge in a road trip without worrying too much about health issues like an itchy throat or a cold ruining your fun. If you are planning a road trip with your family or friends this winter, here are some tips to ensure you stay safe and have a great time.

Many people assume that unlike other kinds of travel, road trips can be fairly spontaneous and don't require a lot of planning. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When traveling by yourself in a car, you definitely need to plan your trip a bit in advance and figure out things like stay, etc. beforehand so that you aren't left stranded. ...
... In a country like India, especially given the uncertainty of Covid, restaurants, and hotels can open and shut at any time so it is always advisable to book ahead. Make sure you plan your route carefully as well so that you don't run into any surprises along the way. A good tip here is to always talk to the locals. Wherever you stay, make sure you interact with the people nearby and ask them about the next destination. You may also want to consult with bus drivers and taxi drivers who know the nearby roads well so that they can give you the latest real updates on road conditions etc. This is especially a major concern when traveling to hill stations that are prone to landslides etc. Many people get stuck in landslides every year and no online travelogue will be able to advise you about such things the way the locals will.

Another thing people take for granted is their luggage. Just because you are on a road trip doesn't mean you should be lugging around a ridiculous amount of luggage. You should keep yourself flexible at all times so that you are prepared for any eventuality that may arise. However, make sure you pack certain essentials. For instance, you should always have emergency gear like torches, blankets, matches, and a portable stove as well as some food that can be easily prepared and consumed. You never know when you may have a breakdown and could find yourself stranded in some cold, deserted place. It's a good idea to also stock up on essential medicines like khasi ki dawa for cough, diarrhea pills, etc. These basic meds should always be a part of your first aid kit to ensure you are ready for anything the road might throw at you. Stocking up on water is also important since drinking water from untested sources is not advisable. Bear in mind that a road trip means you could be frequently driving for hours without access to hygienic facilities. So always eat right and from trusted places so that you don't end up disrupting your travel plans. With a little bit of planning and foresight about such matters, you should have a great time.

Finally, bear in mind that flexibility is extremely important when you are out on the road. Unlike other trips, a road trip can and will run into a fair amount of roadblocks and it will all come down to how prepared you are for such eventualities. Not packing well could be a recipe for disaster, especially if you miss out on essential tools in case your car breaks down. Many people tend to ignore a number of safety issues while traveling by road and simply assume that help will always be a phone call away. It's possible that you may end up in a town or place that doesn't have good cell reception or doesn't support your provider. Once again, it is a good idea to check with the locals and get a local SIM card for very remote locations in far-flung corners of the country. Also, make sure you have all the emergency numbers of that area handy since you may not always have internet access. Whenever needed, don't be afraid to ask for help and seek advice be it online or offline. Stay away from issues like khasi, cold, fever, etc. by packing the right meds and nothing should stop you from enjoying your road trip to the fullest.
