You heat and cool your house to try to keep it at a comfortable temperature. In the winter you're heating, in the summer you're cooling. Insulation is an important part of this. When you're heating, insulation reduces the amount of heat that leaks out of your house to the outside. When you're cooling, insulation reduces the amount of heat that leaks in to your house from the outside.

It's particularly important to keep your roof well insulated. In a typical home, almost half the heat loss occurs through the roof. Loft insulation is easy and cheap to add, and adding it typically pays for itself in under a year.

You might have already had good insulation put in your loft. But good insulation doesn't always last. You need to check it over from time to time to make sure that bits of insulation haven't fallen out of place, or maybe even been eaten by mice! Even just a small patch of poorly insulated roof can cost a lot in excess heating and cooling over the course of a year.

Loft insulation is easy to add in many homes. Walls can be more tricky. If you've got cavity walls you can get cavity wall insulation ...
... fitted. This is usually done by companies that specialize in cavity wall insulation. They will drill holes in your wall, pump insulation into the cavity, and seal the holes back up again. Like loft insulation, cavity wall insulation usually pays for itself very quickly.

The other thing to watch out for is drafts. Drafty houses waste lots of energy unnecessarily on heating and cooling the air that continually leaks in from outside. If your house is particularly drafty, the drafts may be costing you more than poor insulation in your roof would cost you. Drafts are usually very easy to fix, so address them as soon as possible so that you can stop wasting energy and money.

The summer is usually the best time to check over your insulation and improve it. Warm weather helps when you're plugging leaks from outside or clambering around in your loft. Don't delay, fix your insulation today!
