Packaging has existed in some form or another since the beginning of bartering and the trade of products. However, modern packaging, which is dominated by mostly plastics, did not completely mature until the late 1900s.
Looking back on the world’s first forms of packaging
Tinplate was used in early packaging - a technique known as tinning. Tinplate packaging first appeared in Bohemia (part of the modern-day Czech Republic) and in 1667, Andrew Yarranton - an English engineer - had brought it to England. By the 1700s, many retailers in the Bristol Channel were selling products that were packed in tinplate boxes, and nearly 90,000 tinplates were produced by British manufacturers by 1805, of which no less than 50,000 were exported.
The multiple wars were among the most powerful motivators of packaging innovation in the 1900s. Manufacturers, for example, had to develop better means to transport munitions and food rations to the military overseas during World War II. Not only that, but they had to devise packaging in such ways that it would keep the products accessible, while also keeping the contents safe and ...
... secure. As a result of packaging problems during WWII, the United States adopted packaging-related mil-spec rules.
Contract manufacturing is not something that was invented; rather, it is a process that has evolved over many years. Contract packaging companies have focused on developing packaging from post-consumer recycled materials such as paper and aluminum since the 1980s, and this was done in reaction to both public influence and government rules.
What is contract packaging?
The process of assembling a product (wet or dry) into its finished package, is commonly referred to as contract packaging. Contract packaging solutions can be tailored to the exact scope of the product packaging, which differs substantially between commercial, trade, and retail industries. Companies that offer contract packaging solutions usually also act as an extension of the manufacturing company.
Depending on the product itself, the final packaging could be anything from a flexible stick pack, blister packaging, a sealed plastic bag, a standing corrugated retail point-of-sale display, a plastic or thermoformed clamshell, or a transport tray (to name a few examples). Companies that provide contract packaging solutions might be assigned tasks as complex as designing and producing the packaging, and filling the entire package, or simply applying a bar code sticker on the product.
Contract packaging solutions come in varying degrees and can be used in combination or separately, depending on the development and scope of the product. Contract package manufacturers usually also collaborate with product manufacturers to plan, personalize, and execute the process in accordance with the customer’s demand and in a specific timeframe.
Some packaging companies offer a wide range of conventional and customized contract packaging solutions. These companies have state-of-the-art facilities that are well-equipped to ensure that products do not become contaminated or damaged during the process or in transit or storage. What is also important, is that they package products in an appealing manner, so that consumers are interested in buying the product.
Many businesses and retailers turn to contract manufacturing because these companies have capabilities and offer services that others don’t. Health and nutrition, personal care and cosmetics, medicine and pharmacy, and food and beverage, are just a few of the various sectors that rely on contract packaging solutions.
Classification is often the first step in contract packaging solutions. Companies that provide these services will first determine the type of packaging services their clients need, and then identify and consider a variety of application requirements/specifications. Quality assurance, shelf life, marketing, graphic design, labeling, packaging rules, child safety regulations, application environment, end-use, packaging volumes and quantities, timeframes, and budget are a few examples.
There are many benefits to contract packaging, and packaging manufacturers are well-equipped to handle anything from simple to complex and time-consuming packaging solutions. They can supply a wide range of businesses with colorfully designed labels, one-of-a-kind shapes and custom packaging, to help your brand stand out from a crowded market.
