13 Rules To Help A Man Dress Better
More rules appear to be the last thing we need in today's world. But good advice is priceless, and as menswear becomes more rich and varied, having a valuable fall-back position to rely on can help in moments of confusion and self-doubt. These 'rules' are historically based and always lean conservative – they've worked for generations, so they should work today as well.
1. Wear a suit that fits.
The keyword here is moderation. If you buy off the rack, make sure the shoulders fit properly because the chest and waist can be easily adjusted. If this is your main or only suit over your comfortable cotton vests, avoid new trends or "timepiece" suits that may look good in the store but overstate your presence. These suits are frequently very short-lived and begin to appear as a novelty over time. Classic is the best and most useful option – dark, two-button, single-breasted, with moderate details. The idea is to think of this suit as a blank canvas on which to build various ideas of individuality. It's the way you wear it, not the label on the inside that makes ...
... an impression.
2. Get a great watch
A men's watch is like a work of art. They can convey your personality in a single glance. If you only have one quality watch, make it functional while also being practical and not too overbearing. Aesthetic, functional, and rugged sports models go with everything and can withstand the rigours of everyday wear. The 40mm size is the gold standard. However, keep in mind that wrist size is only a guideline, and the fit should always relate to the size of the man wearing the watch.
3. Don’t be afraid of colour
Whether you're dressing for a casual or formal occasion, a splash of colour is something you should consider. Most men are intimidated by colour and will stick to navy and grey, but colour can also be timeless. Pinks, greens, mustard, and brighter blues are especially versatile year-round colours that will brighten up any outfit. However, keep in mind that when it comes to colour, less is more: one garment in an outfit will suffice.
4. Wear your jeans often
The slim taper is a trendy pair of jeans. It's wider in the thigh to keep you comfortable but narrows at the ankle to allow you to wear casual or semi-formal footwear. Your jeans are a wardrobe staple, so don't be afraid to wear them until they are worn and comfortable.
5. Look after your appearance
This is the kind of advice you'd expect from your mother. You've made an investment in all of these items, so you should take good care of them. Get some good hangers, dry clean your clothes, wash them on the gentle cycle in the washing machine, and avoid tumble drying. Make it a habit to clean and polish your shoes on a regular basis, and to iron your shirts and pants as needed. The same is true for you. Brush your teeth and hair on a regular basis, shower, style your hair, clip your nails, and trim any unwanted hair.
6. Comfortable home clothes can make you feel great
Choose your home clothes to make you feel at ease and confident such as the soft Premium cotton lungies. There is nothing more vexing than home clothes with seams in all the wrong places. Also, keep in mind that when working out, people are likely to see you in your home clothes, so make sure it fits properly and is stylish and understated.
7. Great shoes make the man
Whether you're going for a walk or dressing up formally, choose a quality shoe that isn't too busy or branded. Cheap shoes lose their shape and are very limited in what they can be worn with. Many men's magazines state that shoes are the most important part of making a good first impression, so make sure you have a good pair that has been well cared for.
8. Keep accessories to a minimum
Accessorizing with bright colours and patterns is one of the best ways to stand out in a crowd, but it isn't always the type of attention you want. As a general rule, keep your accessories with subtle accents and choose items with little texture. This philosophy will also help you when combining accessories with other clothing, as it will tend to match more of your outfits. Obviously, there are times when the brash style is appropriate, but as a general rule for men's fashion, we recommend subtlety over brashness.
9. Know yourself
Some people can walk into a room and be noticed regardless of what they are wearing. They have a confident demeanour about them. Choose clothes that make you feel confident and at ease in your own skin. There is nothing more unfashionable than someone who is told what to wear when it does not suit their personality.
10. Keep in mind where you are
It is critical to match your environment. At a black-tie event, you will obviously dress more conservatively than at a dance band fundraiser. Overdressing or underdressing will often make you feel uneasy, and your confidence will suffer as a result.
11. Glasses aren’t just for your eyes
A great pair of spectacles can really pull your outfit together. Rather than being embarrassed to wear them, choose something that complements the look you want to achieve. Glasses, if fashionable and current, are an important part of your overall appearance.
12. Choose your outerwear wisely
Traditionally, a coat that was appropriate for all occasions was made of wool, which did not fare well in inclement weather. With today's many different fabrics and outerwear technology, there is always a garment that is both lightweight and functional. Make sure it can be worn with a variety of outfits, from formal to casual.
13. A basic shirt does wonder
It may surprise you to learn that a basic shirt, if properly pressed, is probably the most functional piece of clothing you can own. A well-pressed shirt with a collar and no tie will also suffice for 90% of the occasions you will attend.
These rules will serve as a basic guideline for most people who are just starting out in their style, but remember that rules can be broken as you become more comfortable with who you are fashionable. You can't go wrong if you stick to the basics and add some flair when you're ready.
