There are business owners out there that are in denial regarding the potential huge role and impact of the internet on business growth. Most companies carry on without updating their site for years. Even worse, most have no idea how many customers they are losing by not having their products or services visible on mobile internet.

The internet allows us to connect with customers and allow them to experience instant gratification by finding what they need when they need it. This becomes an even more positive experience to the customer if they can do it on the go. Every mobile carrier in the U.S. offers phones that connect to the internet on a real web browser. We also have the iPad which has really put a focus on mobile connectivity, internet access as simply as carrying our daily planner. The iPad could be just the beginning. HP is rumored to release the Slate which is their version of an iPad. I have no doubt that Google or HTC will be making an Android version as well.

Just yesterday I made two purchases at the grocery store after using my cell phone to Google information on a product and then used it to find ...
... the cheapest gas on the way home. Because I had that information available, I was able to purchase those products instantly. What better time to be found by a customer … exactly when they need it.

This doesn’t mean you have to immediately run out and hire an application programmer to create an app for your website. Of course that would be a great advantage but you can start by making simple changes to the current look of your site. Here are a few points:

Test your site’s mobile capability preferably from an iPhone or Android Phone. This will help you audit what features you need to address on your site.

Consider your navigation menu. Consumers are getting used to touching visible buttons on a screen. Make your navigation more touch screen friendly.

Get rid of promotional pop-ups on your home page. Unless you have proof that pop-up is converting; just get rid of it.

Reduce or eliminate the use of Flash animation. The iPhone and iPad have chosen not to include this capability making flash increasingly obsolete.

Less is more. Cluttered sites are out; clean and streamlined is in. Not only is clutter confusing to the consumer but it will be even harder for them to navigate through the website on a smaller screen.

Consider having someone take a look at the current codes and scripts on your page. What you want to pay attention to is HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Ask if these scripts need to be optimized for better mobile visibility.

Hopefully this will be a good starting point and I hope you’ll agree how important having a mobile friendly site is for any business. You can count the increasing rate of consumers using the internet on mobile devices. Don’t risk losing a sale at a vulnerable time for a consumer…when they really need your product or service.
