Greetings from the dark again. Richard Linklater's more than twenty-five years as a filmmaker are loosely linked to his constant desire to study and observe how people interact (or not) in society. Even a friendly game of ping-pong becomes hyper-intense as the match point approaches.

Plays elder statesman and team spiritualist Willoughby

Linklater has assembled a superb cast that manages to capture not only the period but also the essence of the age group. Some of the faces will be familiar, and each of the characters fits this profile well. Tyler Koechlin (Tom Hanks' son in Road to Perdition) is team captain McReynolds, Wyatt Russell (Kurt and Goldie's son) plays elder statesman and team spiritualist Willoughby, Justen Street (former Longhorn player) is the absent-minded, over-enthusiastic first-stringer, J. Quinton Johnson is the at times rational second-line player, and Glen Powell stands out as the smooth-talking and philosophical Finnegan... also a master of the leap.

Young people are very representative of each generation

 Despite the ever-present quest for the girls, Zoey Dutch’s Beverly is the only female character given much screen time, and she makes the most of it as the smart, ambitious young Jake's love interest. I’ve always thought that the music of our young people is very representative of each generation. Linklater seems to agree (the soundtrack is spot-on), as this band oscillates between disco idleness, the sterile and soulless transition to urban cowboy country, and the desperate pleas of young punk rock.

Linklater ensures that cohesive teammates fill

In the three days, we're with the guys, they take their athleticism to every event and even crash a party thrown by Beverley's "artistic and rebellious" band. Finding out who fits where is a ritual not to be missed. Linklater ensures that our cohesive teammates fill our ears with an endless stream of jokes, witty remarks, and insults, each designed to register dominance - if only for a brief moment.

Linklater gives the best glimpse yet

We even see a sequence where the players play ball, and although their tone drops when they take the field, their personalities remain evident. Not only has the show added 'f***wither' to our vocabulary, but it's also brilliant and engaging in its own right. Album and book covers, cars (with Gremlins), stereos, and costumes all give the film a necessary sense of underdevelopment. Be sure to check out the fun for this weekend at 7starhd. Although the film lacks a real plot and is meandering (as are its characters), Linklater gives the best glimpse yet of the young male primate chase of 1980. It's not always pretty or something to be proud of
