Dogs Can Only Benefit From Having Their Teeth Cleaned Regularly
Most pet owners all over the world understand that your kitten, your puppy, the adult, and the senior dog and cat are family members and should be treated as such and be shown love and care. This includes medical care.
Responsible pet owners keep the details of the best veterinarian in their neighborhood close by so that they can book consultations, either at scheduled times or when an emergency comes up. Just as one knows when your children are not well, you quickly know when your dog or cat is not their usual self. They will often look listless and tired; they may stop eating – they may make it clear that they need attention. And most owners know when this means medical attention.
For example, a dog that rubs his/her ears against you may be telling you there is something wrong inside the ear. Therefore, most would try to, say, clean the ears to remove built-up wax with a solution bought for this purpose. You squirt some of the solutions into the ear canal and dab it with dry cotton to clean out the affected area.
If this persists, you may need to take the animal to the vet, as it may be indicative ...
... of something more serious such as an infection. Most owners know how to handle their dog when this happens and may be able, with a solution or medication, to offer the animal some relief. Of course, the vet is the one to intervene when it is clear there may be greater cause for concern.
Think, too, of the dog’s – or the cat’s – teeth. As they grow older, they start to develop all sorts of problems with their teeth. Very often they have smelly breath, or they hurt when they chew and eat. When this happens, you need to take them to the vet because it shows they may be struggling, and the vet may decide to prescribe medication – or alleviate their discomfort by extracting affected teeth.
Of course, it is often possible to delay the onset of tooth decay by making sure you take preventative steps. As is the case with humans, brush the animal’s teeth regularly, with a special toothbrush and paste that you buy from a pet shop – or your veterinarian who is the one that knows what works for what pets. The more often you do it, the easier it will become.
Dental care for pets is often neglected until it is too late. There are, in addition to brushing, a few things every owner can do to help their pets enjoy good dental health, until it may become unavoidable to remove one or more teeth. It is a good habit to regularly check your pet’s mouth for signs of gum disease and tooth decay. If you suspect it could be the case, make an appointment with your vet so he/she can treat the problem.
Look out for pink mouth tissues and gums as that means they enjoy good dental health. If it is red, swollen, or even bleeding, there is a problem and the vet should be consulted. Tartar and plaque can build up, and one way to help prevent this is to feed your dog more dry-food. Dry food needs more chewing, which means the dog’s teeth rub against one another to help clean them. Also, the saliva that is produced helps to clean teeth and remove plaque.
These are some tips, and they go a long way towards helping the dog keep its teeth healthy. When you take your animal to the vet once every year – or six months – it will also be checked for dental problems as part of their check-up. Nothing, however, stops you from taking the animal to the animal clinic and vet the minute you suspect dental issues. And we know: checking their mouths regularly and brushing goes a long way towards ensuring your pet enjoys ongoing dental health.
