Every hunter and competition shooter understands that there is so much more to their hobby, their passion, for some their craft – than merely buying a good firearm whether you prefer a Browning, Benelli, Marlin or Ruger for that matter.

Brands compete, and there are some truly good ones to be bought today. But it does not stop at the brand, or quality, of the firearm you choose. Without the assistance of a good sight/telescopic sight mounted on top of the firearm, you may just as well not start. Some gun shops sell their firearms with such sights already mounted on top of the rifle or gun, whereas others do not and therefore sell these separately, also so that the buyer of the firearm has a choice of which telescopic sight they want to mount/.have mounted on top of the rifle or gun.

Mounting this sight means you need to have a mounting system ready so the scope can fit perfectly and perform accurately once you aim at the target. This means gun and rifle owners will need to make sure they have a good mounting system, which system consists of, typically, a base and accompanying rings. Without these, your shooting ...
... system, i.e., the firearm and scope, is rendered virtually useless.

The scope mount may well be considered the most important link. Without good mounting bases and rings, you can be sure you will aim and miss, waste ammunition, and even wound, not kill your prey. Once you have found a good system (the base and rings) it is important to mount it properly too.

Bad mounting will just add to your frustration. A badly installed system may indeed damage the scope, even the receiver and bolts. Therefore one has to pay heed to the instructions of the retailer or gunsmith you buy your mounting system by following their tips and instructions in terms of which a good system is mounted. If you buy your base and rings from a good source, there should never be a problem as they will always ensure they include a manual that takes the individual through the scope mounting process for A to Z. Fortunately there are some truly great gunsmiths –today also a few outstanding websites – available to deal with, to buy from and whose mounting instructions to follow.

Some people may feel very insecure and ask a gunsmith to do this for them – and pay them a fee. However, the DIY process is, in the main, a fairly straightforward process, and following the instructions of the manufacturer makes it easy and ensures the accuracy you are after.

There are two main types of mounts to choose from, and the scope sight is made to be used with one of these, i.e., a system with ring mounts, or with rail mounts, the latter of which, say, the Picatinny is a well-known option. It is important to know that the role of the rings and their bases (and how they are attached to the scope and the firearm) cannot be underestimated.

Without a good quality base and rings system – properly attached –success in terms of accuracy and precision when you shoot, cannot be guaranteed. Bad quality, badly attached, may cause the scope itself to move or shift from its position, with disastrous results. When you buy your rings – at either the gun shop or online - make sure they will fit the scope: look out for the size since, for example, a 1-inch scope needs to be paired with 1-inch rings; the same is true for other sizes such as 30mm or 34mm for example. Then make sure you buy the base part that goes with the rings you will install. Thereafter it is a matter of following the manufacturer’s instructions.

This means, therefore, to be convinced you are dealing with an experienced, trusted dealer or source to acquire your system, i.e., the rings and base, from.
