Support Akshaya Chaitanya, An Ngo In Mumbai Ensuring Food Security
Food is a basic necessity. We cannot think of anything, but food, when our stomachs are empty. Having said that, there is a considerable population among us that struggle for food every day. There are many non-profit organisations that are addressing hunger in their own capacity by catering to different vulnerable communities across India and the world. Adding to this effort, in July 2021, Akshaya Chaitanya initiated its free food service for underprivileged people in Mumbai.
Akshaya Chaitanya is an NGO in Mumbai working towards ensuring food security and making ‘hunger-free Mumbai a reality’. The NGO opines that access to right food facilitates marginalised section to explore the world of opportunities. Hence, it believes that providing food is not an end, but a means to an end. Akshaya Chaitanya steers its efforts to alleviate hunger in a sustainable way by focussing on its well-defined and pragmatic goals.

Current interventions by Akshaya Chaitanya
To ensure accessibility to nutritious food, Akshaya Chaitanya is currently implementing two feeding programmes for two needy sections of the society, poor people in government hospitals and migrant schoolchildren.
- Hospital Feeding Programme: This is Akshaya Chaitanya’s flagship programme in partnership with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Government of Maharashtra. Through this programme, the NGO provides daily lunch, free of cost, to underprivileged patients and attenders of in-patients in Mumbai’s government hospitals. By providing free food, Akshaya Chaitanya wants to ensure that no one goes hungry while trying to save money to meet treatment cost.
- School Meal Programme: Extending its food programme to children, Akshaya Chaitanya partnered with a child education NGO to provide school meals to migrant children. Through this, the NGO provides free, nutritious lunch to children aged between 6 and 14 years in 3 School on Wheels.
So far, this NGO in Mumbai has served a cumulative of 1,38,096 meals and fulfils food needs of 1,880 beneficiaries daily across 7 government hospitals and 3 School on Wheels.
Where does the meals come from?
Well-aware of the significance of a plate full of good food in the lives of struggling underprivileged individuals, Akshaya Chaitanya takes utmost care in implementing the programmes. The NGO prepares the meals at its own state-of-the-art, FSSAI certified kitchen in Byculla, Mumbai. In order to make the meals wholesome, it follows a cyclic, locally palatable menu and includes a variety of nutritious vegetables and pulses. Akshaya Chaitanya adheres to all safety and quality standards in preparing, packing, delivering, and serving meals to the beneficiaries in hospitals and schools.
Background and credibility
Akshaya Chaitanya is one of the many non-profit organisations under the umbrella of HKM Charitable Foundation. Headquartered in Hyderabad, the HKM Charitable Foundation is a trusted charitable organisation that implements several feeding initiatives across India. It is registered under the Indian Trusts Act 1882, Section 80G and Section 12AA of the Income Tax Act 1961, and under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 2010.
The critical need of Akshaya Chaitanya’s free food service for the poor has been acknowledged and supported by many reputed organisations. TLC Legal, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), Bagri Foundation, ETG Agro, Metro Brands, and J.B. Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (JBCPL) identified with Akshaya Chaitanya’s cause and have generously contributed to support implementation of its feeding programmes. Along with these organisations, many individual donors have contributed to this NGO, testifying it as one of the most trustworthy charities to donate.
