With a surge in the companies that build edge computing data centers to support Internet of Things (IoT) applications and other distributed computing efforts, its traditional room-based cooling systems undeniably poses a challenge for high densities of hot-running IT equipment.
The traditional cooling systems use down-flow perimeter cooling units that distribute cold air under a raised floor while taking return air (warm air) at the top of each AC unit. This often leads to hot spots due to high density of heat load behind the servers, resulting in over-sizing of AC and unpredictable environments. Also in order to avoid hot spots we are pushed to go for active floor tiles this leading into excessive power consumption, additional failure points which can be overcome by providing “INROW COOLING UNITS”
But, unlike traditional cooling systems, in-row cooling systems correct typical air flow issues in data centers. And how does that work? In-row cooling cools and conditions the air targeted at the banks of server cabinets that fill the data center. They can be installed on the floor immediately next to the rack that ...
... takes them closer to the spot where the heat is being generated. Neither cool air nor warm exhaust has to travel far, allowing the units to evaporate high heat loads quicker, allowing a more scalable approach to cooling data centers.
The latest technology helps improve hot and cold aisle containment volume, and still results in excess chilling.
What’s more?
In-row cooling systems take up far less space, allowing more room for IT equipment while offering greater flexibility in terms of where the condensing unit is located, making them suitable for almost any location! Here are some more advantages of an in-row cooling system:
RELIABILITY
The latest in-row cooling systems can have a compressor in the ODU for easier maintenance avoiding any kind of major hot works inside Data Centre, option of dual power supplies and hot-swappable fans in IDU for faster replacement, option of inbuilt heater & humidifier. The basic units may have as many as five fans, so you can pull one out and slide in another without taking the cooling system out of service. The new generation in-row units come with an inverter compressor providing modulation from 25 to 100% seamless modulation.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Containment systems provided with In-row cooling collect the warm air the IT gear expels and delivers it outside, so the cool and warm air never mix. 85 to 95 percent of the cool air produced by an in-row system goes to cooling IT equipment, whereas only about 70 to 80 percent does for room-based systems. The latest in-row systems have an energy efficiency rating (EER) of 3.1 & beyond, which is a ratio of output cooling to input electrical power at a certain outside temperature and humidity. INROW efficiency also increases when heat load reduces (partial load operation) or any time the cooling capacity exceeds the required capacity (for instance when outdoor temperature drops).
ACTIVE REDUNDANCY AND SHARED MODE
The new generation In-row cooling units are capable of providing active redundancy. This option allows all the units installed, including the redundant unit, to operate at the same time and at part loads. This feature also helps to increase system efficiency by reducing energy consumption of the overall system as the inverter units consume less power when they are operating at part load.
MORE SPACE
An in-row architecture can be implemented without a raised floor also; increasing the floor load bearing capacity, reducing installation costs, eliminating need for access ramps, and allowing data centers to exist in buildings without needing headroom to permit the installation of a raised floor.
In-row cooling systems work efficiently within a row of standard server racks, making them easy to couple tightly to the IT equipment to ensure systematic cooling. The latest generation of in-row cooling systems offer a distinct advantage over the earlier generations in terms of where you can install the condensing unit. All in all, just because everyone else is cooling the whole data center with massive CRACs (Computer Room Air Conditioning) or still operating on traditional cooling systems, doesn’t mean you have to do so. Climaveneta’s in-row cooling systems are highly efficient ways to minimize energy usage while maximizing chilling capabilities!
