History Of The Ucla Bruins

The UCLA Bruins are one of the most successful franchises in the history of College Basketball. With the recent passing of coaching legend John Wooden, it is a wonderful time to look back on the successes of the university that he coached for.
The basketball program for the Bruins was established in 1920. Since 1920, the Bruins have become the most successful basketball program in the history of NCAA basketball. Much of this success can be contributed to the late, great John Wooden.
Although the majority of the NCAA basketball titles came during Wooden's tenure, the Bruins did have other successes early. The Bruins managed to win their conference 6 times in the 1920s and three more times in the 1940s. By their last conference championship in the 1940s, Wooden was already the leader of the team.
Wooden coached the Bruins from 1948 until 1975. Over his time with the Bruins they won 620 games while losing just 147. In the early 1950s the Bruins started off well, taking home NCAA Regional 3rd and 4th place several times. The team was solid throughout the 50s, but the 60s is what everyone talks about.
In ...
... the 1960s John Wooden took the UCLA Bruins to a level that was unprecedented. In the 1961-62 season the team was the NCAA 4th place team. This was solid, but not any different than the team had been before. The team really kicked it up to another level in 1963-64. The Bruins came out of nowhere in this season to post a perfect 30-0 season! This season was amazing and brought the Bruins their first NCAA Championship in the history of the school. This would be one of many for the school.
The next season the team did not manage to go undefeated again, but did win twenty eight games in the process of taking home their second NCAA Championship. These back to back championships were huge for the school, and it looked like they were on their way to continuing on with this success.
In the following season, 1965-1966, something inexplicable happened. The back-to-back champions lost their magic. After having tremendous success for two years in a row, the team managed just 18 wins. They did not even manage to make the NCAA tournament. It appeared that the fortunes had changed for the Bruins. They refused to buy into this idea though.
After weathering a tough season, the Bruins turned things around in a big way. The team managed to go undefeated in 1966-67 and took home another NCAA Championship. The team was now on a track that could not be detoured. They managed to take home the next 6 championships after that season, making them the champions for an incredible 7 years in a row. This included a stretch of 88 games without losing for the team. After finishing third in 1973-74 the Bruins returned to the top with a Championship in their final season under John Wooden. Wooden led them to 10 of their 11 total championships in school history.
The Bruins stayed in the top 25 rankings from 1966-1980 before falling out. They have continued to see success since then, but have had some ups and downs. They did win another championship in 1995, their 11th, but have not been a heavy contender the way they were in years past. From 2005-2008 the team finished in the top 4 every year, but they failed to win a NCAA Championship in that span.
