Hunting has been, for centuries, more than simply a means of putting meat on the table. For many throughout the world it is their most favorite pastime and for many others their passion.
Holidays, corporate breakaways from the office, time with your family are often planned around the opportunities available for a hunting trip. It is often planned way ahead, and with good reason too, since there is no guarantee you will find the ideal destination and hunting lease at the very last minute.
In countries such as, say, the US with so many hunters from both sexes and all age groups, individuals and groups may inevitably start competing for the same hunting lease as the best leases get taken quickly. So what makes a lease better than others – even great? Of course, it is essential one finds out as much as possible about the land where the lease is offered – and about the quality of the animals, you are after.
In many parts of the southern US states such as Alabama with its famed Black Belt, Mississippi, Georgia, and surrounds, keen competition among owners of leases ensure that hunters are offered some great ...
... opportunities to hunt and return in the future; however, if you do not know the region or the owners, it may well be worth your while to investigate beforehand. A few tips in this regard may be helpful:
• Weigh up the Options – The first thing to do is to decide if you want to join a hunt club, or if you prefer a private lease. If, for example, you prefer not to be a member of a club (which, for some hunters, is their preference) you will have to find the suitable tract of land for the animals you want to hunt, and you may want to establish the credentials of the landowner.

• Questions such as “What is the likelihood that I will find ample buck of good quality” and “How do I know which tracts are most suitable for my preferred prey, for example, deer”? may help you decide where to look.

• Find a state known for offering great quality deer and other prey, such as in the South. Look around the internet for the options. Also, timber companies are often a great start, as many of them these days not only produce timber and wood: They now manage their lands and forests for wildlife purposes too – such as hunting. Deer love forests with good forage and with water always readily available. Owners of timberland now maximize this fact by offering hunting leases.

• These days the best opportunities are offered by those landowners that employ the services of well-qualified, experienced land management companies and consultancies. These companies manage deer herds and habitats to ensure great herds can indeed be raised there. Establish upfront whether the lease that interests you, is managed by a professional company that supports the ideals of responsible hunting on lands managed specifically for offering leases. There are some companies in the Southeast that do manage deer herds, habitat, and leases for hunters, such as the well-known Westervelt Wildlife Services, as well as other leading groups.

• Consider the credentials of the landowner and his/their management services. Read up about them, their mission, their contribution to conservation, their accreditations, and their standing in the conservationist/ hunting industry. If their reputation places them among the most appreciated services, chances are they will offer a good lease on well-managed land, and with access to good, healthy herds.

• Arrange for a viewing. This is ideal for most to help them decide on a lease. However, not everybody lives near enough the property where they want to take the lease. Ask the owner or his representative (such as the management service) for as much additional detail, even a skype meeting, or a zoom interview, to help you decide.
Then you enter into the best agreement to ensure your next hunting trip is a success and leaves you with fond memories – hopefully, to return in the future.
