Every loving pet owner wants to make sure their favorite animal is short of nothing, also medical care. This has bearing on the public's choices, the pet owners' preferences regarding which animal hospital to deal with, whether they live in Paris, Amsterdam, or Greeley, CO for that matter.
Every pet owner has certain minimum requirements and expectations when it comes to the veterinarian whose services they employ for their animals’ well-being, be it to prevent illness or to treat conditions or offer surgeries. Prevention is indeed better than cure in many cases, as everybody knows. Of course, injuries and emergencies cannot always be prevented, but in many cases, early detection and treatment may indeed ensure your pet leads a happy, long life.

Therefore the aware pet owner makes sure they take their pets – from a young age when they are puppies and kittens still – for their so-called wellness exam, which can be compared to their owners' yearly medical checkup. In some cases, owners prefer to take their animals to the vet twice a year to be doubly sure anything untoward is picked up early enough ...
... to be treated with success.
Early detection often ensures success in treating and making sure your pet’s well-being is considered of high importance. Preventive care can never be stressed enough, as it may help to not only ensure a long, happy life for your pet but also make sure you avoid unnecessary discomfort and expensive treatment later.
A good example is the PennHip and OFA tests for dogs that are done to ascertain how likely your dog is to develop hip dysplasia at some stage. If this likelihood is picked up early during, for example, a wellness test or exam, a good vet with the right experience may be able to conduct procedures that may indeed prevent osteoarthritis in the hip joint. By picking this up early enough, you will save your pet future discomfort and yourself many worries.
Of course, there are many more examples of what happens during such a wellness exam. Animals are evaluated for how well they move, how supple their bodies are, and evaluated for signs of muscular pain, skeletal injuries, and the like. With early intervention, good orthopedic care is applied to help heal affected areas and offer your pet better movement once more.
These wellness tests, when conducted by a preferred veterinary service, will include blood tests, testing their urine for any signs of potential illness, they will be screened for parasites, they will be checked for all signs of possible problems that the vet may be able to prevent if these are detected early. Temperature and pulse rates are checked, their abdomen for any abnormalities and, for example, cancerous growths, tests are performed to look at issues such as diabetes and kidney disease.
Dental health is another issue. Dogs and cats should be evaluated for dental health, and advice may be offered regarding diet to help keep teeth healthy; teeth are cleaned and impurities removed to help preserve dental health.
Their ears are checked for possible problems, their organs for, say, irregular heartbeat – and medication prescribed to help keep them healthy. A good vet will check for obesity and advise the owners on how to adjust the pet's lifestyle in terms of regular exercise and a proper, healthy diet.
It is clear that these tests and exams are not particularly different from what humans experience during their yearly checkups. All of this is done to help prevent certain conditions – and to offer immediate treatment in those cases where irregularities are already present. The checkup, or wellness test and exam, is a sure way of helping your pet stay happy and healthy for longer, to enjoy a good life, and to make sure they bring you joy as you show you care about their well-being.
