If you want to work as a professional engineer in Ontario, and your work includes the process of assessing, designing, planning, composing, directing, consulting, supervising, reporting, or handling any of acts, then you need to have a professional engineering license (P. Eng). This license is given by Professional Engineers Ontario.

What is Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO)?

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), used to be known as the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO) is a self-regulatory authority bearing the responsibility of governing Ontario’s 85,000 professional engineers. It has also established criteria, and it regulates engineering practice in this Canadian providence. PEO is the licensing and regulating authority for professional engineering in the Ontario province.

This regulating and governing organization was founded on 14, June 1922. With a statutory mandate under the Professional Engineers Act of Ontario, it undertakes the responsibility to protect the public interests where engineering is concerned. It is also mandated with educating its members about the recent ...
... research and best practices developments and maintaining a code of ethics that gives the public interest priority. An engineer with a license is recognized by the P.Eng. After the name.

So, if you are looking for an engineering license, then you must apply for a professional engineering license to the Professional Engineering Ontario association. But, before you move further, you must check whether you fulfil the following criteria or not.

Eligibility criteria for Professional Engineering Licence:

1. Your age is 18 or above and your character is good.
2. If you have attained an undergraduate engineering degree from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB)-accredited program or any other equal qualifications, and, if required, complete any technical exams.
3. You have to show at least 48 months of acceptable engineering work experience that can be verified. Out of that experience, 12 months must be from a Canadian jurisdiction and covered under a licensed professional engineer.
4. After the completion of PEO’s Professional Practice Examination (PPE). (you will read below about this)

It must be known that it is not compulsory for an international engineering graduate to be a Canadian national or landed immigration for application for their P.Eng. Students from any part of the world can start their licensure process even if it is done outside of the country.
The licensing process consists of many steps. You can get an application form from PEO’s or Professional Engineers Ontario website that must be supported with as many details as possible for your proper evaluation. As a candidate, you also need to get an academic assessment, engineering experience record, Professional Practice Examination (PPE) and references.

What is Professional Practice Examination (PPE)?

The Professional Practice Examination or PPE is an exam that is based on 2 parts; ethics and law. It is a closed book essay formation exam provided 3 times in a year (April, August and December) that you can write across and outside of the country. You can also have an examination date, if made a special request, outside of the determined times if you are not available for any of the general exam dates.
Every candidate has to pass the PPE and achieve at least 50%. Remember only failed portions of the exam are required to be written again (law or ethics).

Professional Engineers Ontario code of ethics:

An engineer has to work within some limits so that they don’t do anything that can lay a negative effect on the public, their employer, their clients and other licensed engineers of the same profession.
And, here the code of ethics of Professional Engineers Ontario comes into play. It is a list of ethics that a professional engineer has to follow. It clearly defines their duty to society, which means considering the public welfare as paramount, above their duties to clients and employers. The engineer’s duty as an employee to their employer includes acting as faithful agents or trustees; they must keep their client information confidential. Moreover, they also bear the responsibility of avoiding or disclosing conflicts of interest. Their duty to clients means that a professional engineer has to immediately disclose any indirect or direct interest that may prejudice their professional judgment.

The following are the expectations that a professional engineer has to fulfil:

1. The engineer has to maintain fairness and loyalty to the workmates, employers, clients, subordinates and employees.
2. Loyalty to the public wants
3. Dedication to the high ideals of personal honour and professional integrity
4. Knowledge and awareness of the developments in the area of professional engineering related to any services that are undertaken
5. Eligibility to perform any undertaken professional engineering services.
