Colonoscopy is the internal examination of the colon and rectum by a colonoscope to evaluate symptoms of the colon (eg. Rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits, persistent abdominal pain, etc), or to screen asymptomatic individuals who are at the risk of colon cancer. Colonoscope is a long, flexible tube about half an inch in diameter with camera attached at the end. It can detect ulcers inflamed tissue and abnormal growths in the walls of the colon.

There are some rules before, during and after the colonoscopy. Before you have a colonoscopy procedure you should inform your doctor of any medical conditions. Allergies to medications, lung conditions, pregnancy and heart conditions are all things that you should inform your doctor about, prior to a colonoscopy. The doctor may suggest some restrictions on fluid or diet intake before a colonoscopy procedure. Besides the dietary restrictions, the doctor may ask you to take laxatives to assist n cleansing your colon in ensure that the colonoscopy is successful. In addition to laxatives, a doctor may ask that you give yourself two enemas. Usually either the night before or the ...
... morning of the colonoscopy, the doctor will have you give yourself an enema to fully cleanse the colon so that the walls can be easily seen. If an enema is required, you will need to try and hold the solution for five minutes before you release it. Before you go into the doctor for a colonoscopy procedure, you must arrange for transportation. Sedating medication is given during the colonoscopy procedure, making it unsafe to drive.

You will be given a pain reliever and some sedation, so that you will be relaxed and comfortable. You may be asleep during the colonoscopy or be unable to remember it following the procedure. You will be made to lie on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chest, and your doctor will pass the well lubricated colonoscope into your anus, gently guiding it through the rectum and into the colon. Small amounts of air will be pumped in to expand the colon for proper visualization of the colon walls. Your doctor can remove growths, called polyps during the colonoscopy, and later send it to the laboratory to test for signs of cancer. Polyps are common and usually benign; however, most colorectal cancers begin as polyps, so they should always be tested. Biopsies can also be taken from abnormal looking tissues in the walls of the colon. If bleeding occurs following biopsy or removal of polyps, it can be stopped via diathermy passed through the colonscope.
