Formal wear for men has come a long way since the days of the tweed suit. Today you will find more options for men's formal wear, from suits to ties to blazers, than ever before. The days of tweed suits are coming to an end, but the changing fashion trends show no sign of stopping. In fact, for the savvy man, they can even be used as part of an everyday wardrobe.

If you find yourself being asked to attend an invitation that requires business casual attire, then it's a safe bet it's going to be a black-tie affair, which means a white tuxedo, a dark colored shirt, and of course, there s little wiggle room on it for error. Along with the shirt comes the tie, with the choice of silk, linen or wool.

Silk is always a good choice, especially if it matches the shirt in color and style. It also gives the appearance of elegance, class and success. Wool gives the appearance of warmth and weight and is a great choice for a lighter suit, whereas linen is always a good choice for a heavier fabric like a dark blue business suit.

The most common type of suit these days is a three-piece ...
... suit, consisting of a shirt, jacket and tie. It isn't uncommon to see other items such as a vented jacket or even a vest worn with the traditional three-piece suit. As well as the clothing, footwear can make or break your entire outfit.
Shoes can be either staid or loud, and often depend on whether you are attending a less formal or more formal event. For instance, for a less formal gathering such as a holiday party, you might consider staying away from the bright reds and pinks and opt for something a bit smarter, perhaps a crisp white or black oxford.

If you are attending a more formal occasion, like a wedding reception, you will obviously want to choose your clothing and accessories carefully. One of the key items in your ensemble is the blazer. A quality double-breasted or slim-fit blazer is worn with a pair of trousers is always a good choice, as is a long-sleeved or sleeveless shirt, preferably in a plain color. For the wedding day, a smart necktie would complete your look.

Another important item in any man's formal attire is the pocket square. A quality pocket square can give any shirt or trouser a smart finishing touch and help create the perfect finish to any suit or jacket.

One of the keys to pulling off a good pocket square is finding one that suits your shape and size. Whether you are trying to create a more fitted look or simply want to add a bit of height to your tie, a good pocket square can do the trick.

Men also need to choose the right material for their suits. A tailored, traditional suit will need a different material than a modern, less formal suit. A blazer will allow you to pull off both styles without looking out of place. A tweed suit, however, is a much better choice for men who prefer wearing a suit with trousers or jeans.

A traditional, slightly dressy blazer in a wool or silk blend is a great way to update your informal wear so that it suits your budget and is suitable for the occasion. A single-breasted, double-length, single-pocketed, wool or silk gingham suit is also a very good choice for tailoring.

If you are choosing this type of suit for more formal attire, choose a color that is in keeping with the rest of your wardrobe and does not clash with your shirt or trousers. If you have chosen a silk or wool suit, you can even choose a lining in a complementary color.

For a more casual day out, your best bet are trousers in a variety of colors. Go with darker hues of your choice, like darker hunter green, or a white or blue blazer in linen. For more of a party atmosphere, a lighter, summery hue in linen or cotton will be very welcome.

Choosing a pair of dress pants that match your shirt or trouser is a great way to keep your look fresh, although a dressier, smarter pair of dress pants would also be appropriate for more formal attire. Men's tailoring has never been so stylish.
