Length of stay for surgery
Surgery is performed during the day on the day the patient arrives and leaves the hospital (or surgical unit), meaning the patient does not have to stay overnight. If you are having surgery during the day, you may be asked to prepare in advance for surgery (for example, not eating or drinking after a certain time). Eligibility for day surgery depends not only on the operation but also on the patient’s fitness and the patient’s social situation.More information can be obtained from the Literature Publishers.
If you are not told that your surgery will be day surgery, you will have to stay in the hospital. Ask if you want to stay overnight and for how many days.
The Journal of Clinical Images and Case Reports publishes general surgery case reports journal in all areas of surgery. It should be genuine, understandable, academically and medically interesting for surgeons, trainees and researchers in all surgical subspecialties as well as international audiences of doctors in the relevant field. All surgical case report journals submitted must comply with the relevant reporting criteria.

... Planned or unplanned surgery
Selective surgery is the term for pre-scheduled operations.
The term emergency surgery is used for operations that require immediate hospitalization, usually by accident and emergency department. Emergency surgery is usually performed within 24 hours and can be done immediately or overnight for serious or life-threatening conditions.
Types of surgical procedure
Open surgery is the most common type of surgery and is characterized by staples or stitches used to close the incision.
The keyhole surgery is performed with the help of a small incision in the skin of a patient whose tip is light (known as a fiber optic light source). Surgeons perform the operation using special equipment inserted through a tube. Keyhole surgery causes less pain and trauma to the patient than open surgery and is used for augmented conditions.
Laparoscopic surgery is similar to keyhole surgery but refers specifically to operations performed inside the abdomen and in the peritoneum (lining of the abdomen).
More information about keyhole surgery can be obtained from the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
The microsurgery procedure uses powerful magnifying instruments and delicate and extremely small instruments to work on small structures such as small arteries, veins, ear bones or the inside of the eye.
The Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Surgeon has extensive experience in all types of surgical procedures, including traditional and minimally invasive. Your surgeon will discuss any options with you and your family to identify the approach that gives you the best long-term results.
Ask your team any questions about your work. We want you to feel informed and confident in your experiences with us.
Also called traditional or open
Least aggressive with robotics
We try to use the least aggressive technique. Sometimes, however, we can get better results for you by using traditional procedures instead of less aggressive ones.
Minimally invasive surgery
During the minimally invasive procedure, surgeons use a variety of techniques such as laparoscopic, endoscopic, endovascular, "keyhole" and thoracic to reduce disruption in your body. With minimally invasive surgery, your surgeon will insert small surgical instruments into small incisions or small elastic tubes that open into blood vessels or mouths or nostrils to reach the surgical site. We also use tools, small cameras or imaging to see during the process.
Benefits can include:
A shorter recovery
Smaller scar
Lower risk of infection
Less blood loss
Robotic surgery
Small incisions and microscopic equipment are also used in the robot-assisted process. Our experienced surgeons use the most advanced generation surgical systems, controlling the procedure from a nearby console. Since we invested in this technology in 2008, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Surgeons have performed thousands of surgeries using this system.
In addition to the above, the advantages of robot-assisted surgery over traditional surgery include:
Superior 3D visualization of the interior of the body at the surgical site
Easy access to difficult places
