Combo Bathtubs And Showers Are Often The Answer
The modern bathtub is nothing new the first one was invented in 1883 by an American, John Michael Kohlerthat took a cast-iron horse trough to which he added four decorative feet at the bottom and covered it in an enamel finish. But, the first tubs go back much further in history, with some reports estimating as early as 3300 BC. Today we are interested in what the options are for us in this day and age.
For most, it boils down to having a good tub that allows us to lie back and submerge as much of our body as we feel comfortable with and then clean ourselves. There are different bathtubs to suit many needs and requirements; some are made of cast iron to whose surfaces porcelain or enamel are added, some of the steel to which porcelain or enamel is added for the finish, others are manufactured from polyester reinforced with fibreglass, or tubs made of thermoformed acrylic – and other possibilities. A lot depends on individual preference and decorative aspects.
But it goes beyond what the tub is made of, or how much importance is attached to decorative aspects. It is very often about the practical side of how ...
... the tub – or a shower – is used, and how conveniently the individual accesses the tub or the shower area. For example, young people normally have no problem with getting into or out of a tub, even if it has a higher-than-normal outer edge. It is not necessarily the same for the elderly or the person with mobility issues.
These people will certainly benefit from a different option, a tub with features that make it easier to get in – and out afterwards. Modern designs do, indeed, make this possible as certain tubs – and showers – are designed for the person that finds it difficult to access their bath or shower area. The answer is the so-called walk-in bathtub or shower.
This means you literally walk into the tub by opening a door fitted to the tub so you are inside the tub immediately and simply close the door and go ahead with filling it up. As for showering, the person that struggles with mobility, or the elderly that may be scared to slip and fall, the answer is also to look around for a low-step walk-in shower, not one with edges built up to prevent water from spilling. A modern, walk-in shower will be designed to allow for water to flow out freely and quickly, and not dam up inside the shower area.
This means a low step is ideal for those individuals such as the elderly, or those with weaker bodies. These days such showers are available from different retailers. Many individuals or families, or retirement homes, for example, also make us use of a combo, i.e., a bathtub and shower in the same space to give you the option of either taking a bath or a shower if that is your preference – in the same space without having to clog up the bathroom and, therefore, freeing up space for more cupboards or vanity slabs, for example.
There are some manufacturers out there that offer the customer great options, for example, a tub with a seat to sit on for more comfort and convenience, or a double shower head with different functions. Leading companies design and manufacture such combo options to still offer what you would expect from separate tubs and showers, such as hydro jets for the tub, anti-slip surfaces and adjustable headrests, for example.
With modern technology and new ideas, it is possible to create a much more user-friendly bathtub, shower – or combination of the two – these days.
