Distilled water may seem made for the sole purpose of drinking but the manufacture of this grade of water is important to many companies and human activities. Whether for domestic or industrial purposes, this kind of pure water is used in many ways. While it is used in cooking and in aquariums, it is also utilized in watering wet-cell batteries, motor vehicles, and steam irons.

The purity of drinking water may make it ideal for drinking, but the cost of this kind of product may outweigh that benefit. In fact, most people would just be fine drinking other types of processed water. For instance, bottled water that has undergone filtration and sterilization is already quite potable. For human drinking, the only important thing is for water to have undergone an appreciable level of treatment. Some people would just consume water coming out of their taps. This kind of water has undergone treatment process to remove sediments and much solute. Chlorination of water kills most of the harmful microorganisms too. Hence, water supplied in houses is just fine.

Some experts believe that long-term intake of distilled ...
... water can cause health problems because rapid leaching of nutrients may result from it. But there are inconsistent opinions regarding this issue as some think water without minerals is nowhere near better or worse. In fact, there may be no significant health effect difference between consumption of deionized types of pure water and consumption of typical mineral water or plain tap water. Water that is distilled may be a little safer because it underwent rigid treatment process that removes all impurities from minerals to bacteria.

Plain water may be appropriate for general domestic but not suitable all the time. For instance, microbiological laboratories demand an extremely pure form of water that has no microorganisms to contaminate culture and no ions to leave spots on laboratory glassware. Companies manufacturing chemicals, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, and food use distilled or pure water too.

Distilled water is sometimes compared to demineralized or deionized water. Chemically speaking, these are the same, but they undergo different processes. Distilled type, as the name suggests, undergo distillation which is a process plainly described as the use of evaporation and condensation techniques to render water pure. This is generally an expensive process. On the other hand, deionization of water is achieved by passing water through ion-exchange resin beds, after which water becomes devoid of ions and minerals. These types of water are utilized in chemical and technological applications when the water needed should not contain ions and bacteria. Normally, plain water is not used in cleaning medical apparatuses and cars. Even cleaning of window panes demands pure water. Moreover, serviceable auto batteries also need pure water known as battery water, which is essentially of distilled grade.

Distilled and pure water is also utilized as a coolant for nuclear power plants. Absence of minerals is crucial for this purpose because such components cause deposition on surfaces which can cause equipment and facilities to fail. Washing and rinsing of industrial facilities and equipment like tanks also utilize distilled grade of water, no less. And did you know that even steam irons should use such kind of water?

Aquarium hobbyists also see the need for pure water and warn against the use of chlorinated tap water, which is not going to make a suitable environment for tropical fishes.

Distillation is an important aspect of water treatment because it effectively removes all impurities in water. And while it is an intricate and expensive procedure, distillation of saline water in oceans has been an effective way to produce pure water in ships and ocean vessels. It is the upfront method of rendering seawater usable. Because this process relies much on the equipment where it runs, maintenance of distilling equipment renders the best results; otherwise, the whole process would be to no avail.
