In this modern noir-style revenge film, Mel Gibson wants $70 000 back and demands justice for every criminal he meets. He stole $70,000, but it was from the Chinese mafia, so it doesn't matter. Lots of other people's lives
There's just a lot of clever and funny stuff that happens in a very enjoyable way. Gibson is Porter, the anti-hero, but the film doesn't want to emphasize that. (When his partner and wife betray him, he begins to rebuild his life - and the lives of many other people. He is joined by a beautiful call girl with whom he has a past (Maria Bello), and has to face a series of familiar criminals and recognizable faces (Gregg Henry, Lucy Liu, William Devane, and James Coburn, to name a few).

First my favorite and most obvious
Two things make this film truly memorable. The first my favorite and most obvious is the style. The film evokes 1940s film noir in all the classic ways, comfortably ...
... and confidently. Porter leads a sharp, verbal narrative. The classical tunes of the 1940s echo pleasantly in the background. The characters love the costumes, fedoras, and revolvers. And the film is almost entirely a dull blue monotone. It's just a shame that black and white wasn't chosen.

The plot consists of almost continuous moments
Second, and more importantly, the plot contains almost constant moments of noir action that are hard to identify because they are so disjointed, but when they do happen, they are instantly recognizable. Those moments make you laugh because they are so witty and unusual, but executed with such coolness and lack of pomposity that they are effortlessly even more impressive.

The performance is good and serves the plot
If you appreciate this sort of thing, you know exactly what I mean. And this film is here to deliver it. The performances are good and serve the plot, not the other way around. Gibson is a good lead actor, but at a few points, I would have liked more and consistency. I am reminded of a little conspiracy theory from time to time. That in itself is not a bad thing, but it is not welcome in a film like this.

The film deserves an R rating
Bello was fairly neutral. I mainly liked the criminals who enjoyed their crimes. The film deserves an R rating, but not too much, which suits its style. I particularly like the violence in the film, which is exceptional in places. The film is also based (rather loosely) on a book (The Huntsman by Richard Stark/Donald E. Westlake), which is reflected in the plot. Most films stretch the plot to fit the running time of the film, but this film feels a little more tailored.

There is nothing missing in the film
However, this is not an entirely negative comment. Although I imagine the book would have complemented the plot more, the film lacks nothing. In any case, I am trying to understand the plot and not trying to pass on information to myself. I lean towards the first option. I don't like this type of film, so I had no reason to watch it.

I suspect not everyone thinks the same
