Hunters And Shooters Often Expose Their Ears To High Noise Levels
All hunters and shooters and individuals, whether they are professionals or those that practice shooting for leisure, know that noise made by gun and rifle fire – especially if it happens regularly - can be bothersome.
These sounds cause unpleasantness to the ears, such as great irritation and often momentary deafness or limited ability to hear, but not always only momentary; it can indeed cause permanent deafness or severe hearing problems. The term Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is not strange or unknown among American – and many other – shooters and hunters, as studies have often proved that constant exposure to the negative effects of loud noise (such as gun and rifle fire) will have a long-lasting effect on these people’s ability to hear properly.
It may affect one ear, and often both. Research by scientists, biologists and audiologists, and organizations such as the NIDCD (National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders) in Maryland, US, is very involved in bringing an important message to the public: understand how hearing loss is brought about, what the causes are/could be ...
... and know what you could do to prevent it, or what you could do to make sure you take enough precautions to limit the effects of loud sounds that you may be exposed to regularly.
And not only hunters and shooters are at risk: factory workers, military personnel, the air force where individuals are around noisy jet engines, shooting instructors at the range, DJs in noisy clubs – in fact, anyone that has to listen to high levels of noise all the time.
Professionals that work with these issues pass on relevant information to the public, such as that normal sound happens when people have a normal conversation, or when you listen to soft music, or the sounds in nature – those sounds that cause no unpleasantness for the ear.
Sound is measured in units known as decibel (dB), and it is accepted that normal dB should not exceed 90 – which is already high, considering that normal conversation between adults takes place at around 65 – 70. The moment you go above 90, 100, and more, you do put your ears at risk. Gunfire is normally estimated at around 130, jet engines taking off nearby at 140.
This shows that harsh sound can never be good for the ears and your hearing. These are the reasons so many people make sure they take precautions against damage and possible deafness. For most of the above-mentioned individuals and groups, the answer is found in acquiring earmuffs and the latest technologically advanced earplugs that are worn during exposure to unnatural noise levels.
At first, there were muffs only and foam plugs, and even though they offered good protection, they were not ideal. They would often block out every sound, fit uncomfortably on the head or around – or inside – the ears; therefore, newer products are a great improvement on the older, more traditional options.
These days these muffs and plugs offer much better features, such as digital functions whereby the user can control sound levels, or what sounds and the noise they can hear – and what to eliminate. Of course, these products have been painstakingly developed after good research by professionals, designers, and manufacturers to ensure the user gets the best benefits from their products which, ultimately, is to protect their hearing.
These earmuffs and earplugs can be bought from retailers in specialist shops often supported by hunters and shooters who are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers their ears are constantly exposed to; they can also be ordered from leading websites in the US in states such as Colorado and others where hunting and shooting are popular activities. Some prefer the muffs; others like the plugs better – the latter because they are so small and not as cumbersome as the muffs.
