Exploring The Various Types Of City Persian Rugs
Large and small Persian rugs are decorating and covering the floors of thousands and thousands of homes at present. Almost all narrate the story of legends through exquisite designs. From the outset, all look similar. However, have you ever tried to find out about the different styles of Persian rugs? If we are to categorise them, we have city, village and tribal designs in them. They have been named after their origins.
Since city rugs are woven from the highest quality fibres by master weavers in Iran, we thought of elaborating a bit on them for now. Later, we promise to take a dig into the village and tribal rugs of the Persian style. So, let’s proceed and check out some of the most common variants. By the end of the write-up, you will get a faint idea of the reason behind the high Persian rugs cost.
City Rugs of Persian Style
Here are the most common Persian rugs woven in cities by master weavers:
• Nain
Named after a city, Nain rugs feature floral motifs and are dyed in beautiful shades of navy blue, pink, ivory and light blue. Occasional splashes of green and red further ...
... prettify the floor covers. While the standard Nain rugs are woven outside the city, the higher quality ones are manufactured within the boundary of the urban area. They are recognised by the layers comprising them. For instance, 4La (La meaning layer) refers to the finest among all, whereas 6La signifies a comparatively lower quality with lesser density knots. The 9La rugs are the course among all and comprise low-density knots. Speaking of colours, you shall get to witness either neutral or subtler shades in them. So, if it’s a blue Persian rug, finding a paler shade in it is pretty normal.
• Qum
Pronounced either as Ghome or Ghom and sometimes Qom, the rug is woven from fine silk. It is easily distinguishable by the high knot count and design intricacies. Different regions, plants, gardens, medallions and animals in Iran have inspired its patterns. From the outset, it looks like an HD screen. No wonder people love decorating their living rooms with this area rug!
• Isfahan
This rug has been named after a city in Iran with a similar name. The location is popular for splendid architecture, ancient bridges, majestic architecture and grand palaces. The rug, on the contrary, has taken inspiration from the same features to produce an equally gorgeous floor cover. You can tell by the patterns that they resemble tile works of grand palaces, mosques and gardens. Other distinguishing decorative features are floral motifs, high knot count and superior quality fibres.
• Tabriz
Do you know this rug has been named after one of the biggest cities in Iran? The design constitutes a medallion in the central portion, surrounded by arabesque around and enriched by patterns like cypresses, weeping willow, and other floral details. You can tell by the figural, pictorial and medallion that Tabriz rugs have the most diverse designs.
One of the most famous Tabriz rugs is ‘Tabriz Mahi’. It features a Persian garden with streams on all four sides and fishes in them. Isn’t the latter obvious? After all, the word ‘Mahi’ denotes fish in Farsi.
Likewise, there are plenty of village rugs in the name of Abadeh, Bidjar, Ardebil, Hamadan, Kerman, Heriz, most of which have been named after the popular hamlets in Iran. It’s not the end though. You can find many distinct styles of tribal rugs. It is easy to recognise them by the terms - Afshar, Baluch, Baktiyar, Gabbeh and Qashqai.
