Donate Food To Poor In Mumbai’s Public Hospitals
The 2021 Global Hunger Index list reveals India has slipped seven places and now is ranked 101st out of 116 countries. With a score of 27.5, India’s hunger situation is now bracketed under ‘alarming’ level. This could also be an after effect of COVID-19 pandemic, but that does not give us a reason to overlook the hunger issue.
Government and non-governmental organisations across India are already working to address the hunger situation. One such organisation is Akshaya Chaitanya, an NGO in Mumbai that is addressing hunger in public hospitals. Often, hunger in hospitals goes unnoticed, maybe because we always relate hospital to health, and not hunger. However, the reality in public hospitals has a different story to tell. Public hospitals in Mumbai are the only option for marginalised communities of the city in the event of a health crisis. These patients hail from slums and are mostly daily wage workers or low-income workers. They neither have medical insurance nor any savings, making hospitalisation a huge burden for this section of people. To meet hospital expenses, they either sell their belongings or borrow ...
... money from friends and neighbours. Many a times, in their effort to arrange or save money, they cut on food cost by remaining hungry.
