Pet owners get very attached to their animals who, in turn, show their humans unconditional love. The pets' appreciation for a good life with their owners has often been recorded in heroic tales of dogs saving owners from harm, and cats warning owners of imminent danger, for example.
The pet owner's responsibilities include giving their pet home, a safe place to live, sleep, eat and play. The pet becomes a family member. This also means that pets need to be always sheltered from any harm, which includes those periods when, for whatever reason, the owner is absent from their home, under circumstances that they can’t take the pet with them. This may be a holiday far away, or where pets are not welcome, or when an owner has to leave town for work, and the like.

During their absence the animal needs to be taken care of, to be fed, and given a safe environment where they can sleep and play so that their routine is not interfered with to the extent that they develop angst and unusual behavior. You do not want to return to an emotionally damaged animal. Therefore one has to make plans in advance to ensure ...
... you have nothing to worry about while you are away.
You can get a house sitter, which is not the answer for everybody – or you may wish to consider pet boarding near where you live, be that in a big city such as Los Angeles, New York, or somewhere small in Greeley, CO, for example. Pet boarding services are often available for cats and dogs.
Cats are not always that easy to contain in a new or unknown environment and therefore it is important you find a facility where they can not escape, a facility that will ensure they are reasonably happy and secure where they are kept. Dogs, in the main, are easier as they tend to want to socialize more easily with strange pets.
Owners should look around their region for the facility that will best be able to look after their pet’s well-being. Make sure you look at the facility’s kennels for your dog or the cattery for your cat. Make sure they are properly aired, offer enough space for the animal to move around, a soft place to sleep, access to water, and enough human contact. Pets that are loved by their owners and often touched and spoken to need this close contact, especially when their owners are absent.
Convince yourself that the kennels or cattery you are considering will indeed be the right place emotionally for your animal. But there are some other important issues too, to consider. Think about the following:
• Food – Even though the boarding service may feed your pets, make sure it is the type of food that your pet will eat. Alternatively bring their food with them when you leave them at the facility, with instructions of how often, what combinations, and how to prepare it so your pet’s feeding routine remains unchanged.

• Access to the animal’s medical records – leave a copy of your pet’s medical history with the pet boarding service, contact details of your vet, what medication the pet takes, and anything relevant to their medical condition. It is always a very good idea to talk to your vet about the best boarding facility because he/she may be connected to a great boarding service anyway.

• Talk about treats for your pets - what and how often. Bring the pet’s favorite treats along, with instructions to the staff.

• A good idea is to bring along their favorite toy, or an object that reminds them of you and their home so they know they have not been abandoned.

The above are some useful tips; there are more. Give your pet the best chance to be happy while you’re not around.
