An Overview On How Different Bed Sizes Got Their Names
Today, the terms king and queen is quite common to describe the sizes of different beds. These are such widely used terms to refer to specific bed sizes that even bedding gets names according to these sizes. However, have you ever wondered where these names came from? Does it imply that royalty preferred improved mattresses? The team at Linenshed AUS is passionate about all things bed related. Their online store offers a wide selection of the most exquisite linen bedding. The ranges they have on offer include duvets, quilts and fitted sheets. When it comes to different size options, they also ensure that their clients across the globe will find everything they need to give their bedroom a luxurious yet comfortable appeal. Thus, if you are in the market for a single duvet or a queen fitted sheet, you know where to go to find lasting elegance and the best nature has to offer.
Through their commitment to delivering only the most outstanding handmade items, they also became experts in the history of mattresses and how different bed sizes got their names. The history of how the modern mattress came to where it is today is ...
... quite interesting and they shared insight into this journey with us.
The first mattresses that you could buy were not widely found and lacked popularity. This was until 1926 when Zalmon G Simmons opened his mass production facility to manufacture these mattresses to be able to deliver them to the market at roughly $40. This would equal about $575 if compared to the modern economy. While this might have been a steep price to pay, mattresses started to gain an immense level of interest. While Simmons was manufacturing larger sized mattresses, the convenient way to go during that time was to opt for two twin-sized mattresses rather than a double. It was only around the 1950s that manufacturers of larger sized beds geared up their promotion efforts and started to interest the market into buying larger beds and mattresses.
It was during this time that salespeople wanted to create a desire to own a bigger bed and they linked the terms of king and queen to the bigger bed options. This appeal was often fired by the desire of the buying market to keep up with the Joneses. These marketers used bigger beds to symbolise status and success and the drive to sell bigger beds finally started to pay off. By the 1960s these terms were gaining traction in public.
The need to own a bigger bed was further encouraged by the fact that men started to grow taller. Historical statistics indicate that around the early 1900s roughly only 4% of all men were taller than 6 ft, but by 1960 this percentage has increased to over 20%. It meant that a far larger part of the bed buying market was now interested in owning a bigger bed.
The final proof that this pudding was a success came somewhere between 1953 and 1963. During this period the sales in bigger beds, such as the king or the queen increased from 1% ownership to 5.5%. This was just what the manufacturers of bedlinen needed to follow the trend. They also started to name the bedding that they made for larger mattresses according to the same categories. Today, we know these terms stuck as the words queen and king are universally used to refer to a specific size bed.
Yet, a bigger bed is only comfortable when you have the right size bed linen to go with it and this you will find on the shelves of Linenshed AUS. Here you can buy premium quality linen in all sizes made from the best handpicked raw material available.
