The Indian government has big plans for the gas pipeline in India. They plan to invest Rs.7.5 trillion in the development of gas and oil infrastructure. The gas requirement of the country is 53% imported and they are working to meet these growing gas needs and limit imports. Over the next five years, the prime minister has big plans to expand the gas pipeline infrastructure in India. Till 2024, India is planning to spend $60 billion on building an infrastructure that includes gas terminals and distribution networks across the country.

The pipeline installation companies are all set to create a gas pipeline network that is 16000 kilometers long. They are hopeful the network would be completed in the next four to six years. The most recent 450 km Kochi-Mangaluru gas pipeline is completed and will be serving 2.1 million people with piped natural gas. Along with the pipeline installation, 700 compressed natural gas stations are also installed.

The Kochi-Mangaluru Gas pipeline in India will provide clean fuel to various households, vehicles, and factories set up in Kerala and Karnataka. The pipeline ...
... will be transporting natural gas starting from Kochi and will be covering various districts like Kozhikode, Kannur, Ernakulum, Trissur, Palakkad, and Kasargode. This pipeline will be providing industrial fuel and feedstock for Kerala and Karnataka’s petrochemical and fertilizer sectors. It will be transporting natural gas up to 12 million standard cubic meters per day.

The work on the same started in 2009 and the spending on the project was around Rs.3000 crores. A key milestone towards creating "One Nation One Gas Grid" is the pipeline installation of this pipeline. The households will get piped natural gas (PNG) and the transport sector will get compressed natural gas (CNG) through this pipeline. Both would be environment-friendly and people can afford it too.

PNGRB aims to build a 33,764 Km Natural Gas Pipeline Network to meet the increasing demand of the country. India as a country is consuming 145 million standard cubic meters of gas per day. 19,998 km of gas pipeline are running and 15,369 km are under construction. Another major pipeline installation on its way is Ramanathapuram – Thoothukudi, a 144 km long natural gas pipeline. The pipeline will supply fuel to the petrochemical and fertilizer industry from the Ramanathapuram fields.

This will help open new opportunities for industries and spur the growth of the existing ones. It is estimated that the project will cost 700 crores in order to supply 8 million metric standard cubic meters of natural gas per day. This pipeline is a part of a 1445 km long mega natural gas pipeline project from Ennore to Thoothukudi. Similar to the one above, the objective of the pipeline installation companies is to provide environment-friendly and affordable fuel to households and industries. The pipelines are installed on cultivable fields but the officials insist that they won’t do any harm. But for the longer run pipeline rehabilitation measures should be taken as these pipelines would stay for decades on the fields.

As India plans to double its gas pipeline network, it becomes essential that we also focus on pipeline rehabilitation measures. As the pipeline ages, underground pipeline leak repair becomes a big challenge. To overcome the challenge companies like RACI provide quality engineering solutions for the installation as well as pipeline rehabilitation. We hope the plans for increasing gas consumption percentage of 6% to 15% by 2030, as planned.
