From the different types of bearing available, each type of bearing is involved in a different type of application. One of the types of bearing is the thrust bearing that has different rolling elements. These bearings support axial loads in the rotating devices. The raceways in the thrust bearings have machined faces of mating rings. This modification in the inner and the outer bearing rings allow these thrust bearings to accommodate the radial as well as the combined loads.

There are different types of these rolling elements that are responsible for making the movements possible. The retainers or cages help in keeping these rolling units in place and allowing uniform load-bearing. The different types of rolling elements used in roller thrust bearings include:
Tapered roller bearing: The bearing axis and the contact line between the tapered rollers and raceway help to determine the thrust. The contact angle of more than 45 degrees allows for accommodating the axial loads. As the angle increases towards 90 degrees, it can only accommodate the axial loads. Modification s of including the second row of tapered rollers allows resistance to misalignment thus increasing the working efficiency.
Cylindrical roller bearing: These bearings include cylindrical rollers that are arranged in the perpendicular and radial arrangement. These rollers help in reducing the stress between the rollers and walls of the raceway. These are suitable for axial loads only.
Spherical roller bearing: These include the barrel-shaped rolling elements and the raceways are in the cup and cone design. These allow in self-aligning and prevent the shocks. These bearings accommodate heavy axial loads in one direction and can tolerate moderate radial loads.
Ball thrust bearing: These are suitable only for the radial load. These are the basic types and are susceptible to misalignment and thus include the grooves to prevent this. These are the best choice for moderate loads at a very high speed.
Needle roller bearing: These bearings are suitable for very high axial loads and can accommodate shocks. As these rolling units are small they can be implemented without using the housing washer. These bearings cannot support the radial load. They are known for having minimal height and having the highest number of rolling elements.
Considering the above-mentioned different types of the rolling unit available, selection majorly depends on the required load-carrying capacity. Different rolling elements allow axial or radial load capacity and govern the selection.
