Floods are common in the state of Florida, due to its relatively flat terrain which makes it difficult to drain water. Flooding is considered a coast-to-coast threat that brings destruction and imparts small to severe damages to lives and property. In fact, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requires more flood insurance policies in Florida than any other US state.

Most Floridians are already equipped to deal with this frequent hazard, but for people new to Florida or those who haven’t had any experience with flooding before, it is crucial to learn about the hidden dangers and risks of floodwater beforehand to stay safe especially during the Atlantic hurricane season. ServiceMaster by PWF Pinellas discusses them below.

Flood Hazard Information (from weather.gov)

Flash floods - Begins within six hours of a causative event, such as dam failure or intense rainfall. Characterized by an extreme, rapid flow of high water or a quick rise in water level above a predetermined flood level.

River floods - Happens when water levels in rivers rise and overflow their banks or the edges of their ...
... main channel and overwhelm normally dry areas.

Coastal flooding - Occurs when a coastal process, such as a storm surge, causes seawater to flood the coast.

Dangers and Risks of Flooding Events

Electric Shock

• Strong floods and heavy winds could down powerlines and create an electrical current.
• Wading in standing floodwaters charged with electrical current can cause an electric shock and result in lethal injuries such as burns and even death in serious cases.
• Immediately report downed powerlines to the proper authorities. • Before entering a flooded property, shut off the main power first to prevent being shocked.

Injury From Sharp Objects And Unstable Structures

• Deep and murky floodwaters may conceal sharp objects like bits of metal, broken glass, and nails. Wear proper protective gear in case there is a need to walk across floodwaters.
• Floods affect the structural integrity of buildings, so do not enter structures unless a safety clearance has been announced.
• Shifting noises and other unfamiliar sounds may indicate that a structure is starting to collapse. Leave the area immediately.

Infectious Diseases From Open Wounds

• Treading on contaminated floodwaters while having open wounds could cause bacteria, viruses and other flood-borne infections to enter the human body.
• Wear proper protective gear such as gloves and pants if there is a need to get into the water.

Chemical Poisoning

• Floodwaters contain dangerous chemicals such as gas leaks, oil, pesticides and other toxic substances, which may cause chemical poisoning.
• Symptoms of chemical poisoning include headaches, skin rashes, muscle twitches, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, and confusion and disorientation.

Bacterial Infection From Fecal Matter

• Aside from bacteria and viruses, floodwaters may contain human and animal fecal matter which could cause gastroenteritis, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Avoid contact with floodwater whenever possible.

Danger Of Displaced Wildlife

• Florida is rich in wildlife, so flooding events may carry alligators or snakes near places of residence.
• Floods can also cause stress even to house pets like dogs and cats, causing them to attack people.
