Changing your bed linen is an easy and affordable way of changing up the look and feel of your entire bedroom. It is so simple and so effective. Some people believe in changing their sheets completely every year or so to introduce a new look and to simply enjoy new bedding every once in a while. Some people invest in a few bed linen sets so that they can switch up their bedroom’s look as often as they like, or every season, which is a fairly popular way of doing this. By purchasing several bed linen sets and changing them up every so often, you are ensuring that your sheets last longer as they will be subjected to less use and fewer wash cycles. However, if you are the type of person that enjoys having bed covers that last at least a year or more, then it is best to invest in linen rather than cotton or other materials as linen is very durable, gets softer, and better with each wash, and will generally last a lifetime.

Once you’ve decided on the type of bedding you want, it is time to choose the style, and the one thing that most people wonder about is the difference between flat and fitted sheets. Sure, both types ...
... are available in abundance on every bed linen shelf in every homeware or department store, but which is the best one to use?

The first thing to know is that both flat and fitted sheets serve the same purpose. Both are designed to protect your mattress from stains, excessive moisture, rips, and tears. They also protect your skin, keeping you safely ensconced while you snooze.

Most people know fitted bed sheets as the type that is difficult to fold. That is because they have been specifically designed to tightly and snugly fit over your mattress. They will not come off your mattress while you sleep because they have an elastic that is sewn either into the entire seam or just into each corner, which then hugs the mattress on each of the four corners. This means that the sheet will stay in place on the mattress while you move around as you sleep. A fitted sheet offers superior protection because it fits so snugly and cannot come loose. That is to say that your mattress, which is easily the most expensive part of the bed, will be well-protected by a fitted sheet and may last longer if you choose to use one. Because a fitted sheet also fits so snugly, it doesn’t cause any wrinkles and it creates a smooth surface for sleeping.

Flat sheets are simply large, flat pieces of material that lie against your mattress. Because they don’t fit around the mattress, they are usually used in conjunction with fitted sheets. The flat sheet can be left loose or it can be tucked around the mattress. Many people don’t like sleeping under a flat sheet tucked under the mattress because they feel that it restricts their legs and movement by being so tightly tucked around the mattress. However, a flat sheet used in conjunction with a fitted sheet does mean that your mattress is still protected by the fitted sheet and your duvet or blanket will be protected from your body and perspiration by the flat sheet. During the warm summer months, many people choose to simply lie on the fitted sheet and cover their body only with the flat sheet. This thinner top cover means that you won’t get so hot while sleeping, won’t sweat as much, and your body will still be protected from mosquitoes and other irritants.

Although fitted and flat sheets differ greatly from one another and each serves a specific purpose, the consensus is that it is best to combine both a fitted and flat sheet on your bed for the best rest possible.
