Google I/o 2010
Google hosted the largest developer event of the year, Google I/O on May 19-20, 2010. Two days of intensive technical topics featured Google Chrome, WebM, APIs, GWT, Android, open web technology and many others.
In over 90 sessions, with 5,000 developers and over 180 demonstrations by developers featuring their technologies, engineers discussed with forums the upcoming developments in Internet, mobile and business solutions and applications.
Highlights this year included The Chrome Web Store, which is Google’s attempt to land every great Web application in one location. It’s coming out later this year, initially available only for Chrome use. In addition to being a holding tank for the apps, it enables app developers to market their wares through Google, for sale to end-users.
Day one of the conference also highlighted advancements in the Google App Engine for small business. It now offers business customers a customizable infrastructure to host their own web applications. Special features include access to Google APIs, hosted SQL, and SSL communication. Another update ...
... in Google technology was revealed with the return of the Wave; no invites necessary. It now features email notifications and add-on alerts for improvements, and can be embedded in Web pages.
Day two saw a cloud service with Google Storage for Developers, featuring SSL support, many authentication methods, sharing capabilities for groups, and accessibility to a Web-based control system for management of storage.
A bonus preview of Android 2.2 was also on day two, showing advancements with multiple account use, Android calendar improvements, security advancements, Bluetooth voice-dial, faster speeds, and new Flash Player 10.1 capabilities.
Application programming interface technology was the feature of both days, with Google kicking out a large number of new APIs. These included Google Prediction API, giving new access to the Google machine learning algorithms. Google Buzz was referred to as a “work in progress,†residing in Google Code Labs, Atom, AtomPub, PortableContacts and many others. There’s the Google Moderator API, which Google uses internally for meetings and to gather feedback comments from employees or peripheral contractors, allowing them to keep a handle on what’s going on in their own company.
The big news was Google TV. It allows TV viewing as you might currently know it with the powerful interactive features of the Internet. It allows easy moving between television and the Internet, giving access to millions of channels of information, entertainment, shopping, gaming, and whatever the Internet television equals. It can be used as a movie viewer, slideshow viewer, gaming console, stereo, or interactive media device.
The thrust of Google’s information about this service is that the Internet provides much more content than any cable provider’s offerings, and this new service can be tailored to allow viewing of say, movies, on a larger screen than your computer monitor, from the comfort of your sofa. Scheduling is up to you, and the selection of channels is veritably infinite. The idea that you can access any of the features of the Internet, including content, while watching from the comfort of your bedroom or living room is an exciting idea, and one Google’s throwing their prodigious weight behind.
