In the beauty world, the word hyperpigmentation is used quite frequently, but what exactly is hyperpigmentation and what causes the discolouration on your skin?
What is hyperpigmentation?
According to an aesthetic practitioner attached to a well-known beauty house in the UK, hyperpigmentation refers to the dark spots that appear on the skin, especially as one age. This happens when the melanocyte cells in your skin provide too much melanoma (which gives colour to your hair and skin). Although the production of melanoma is determined by your genes, there are several causes of hyperpigmentation, of which the sun's UV rays are the biggest culprit.
Melanoma is produced by your skin to absorb damaging UV rays that penetrate your skin - this is what gives you a tanned appearance when you spend some hours in the sun. However, too much sun exposure (UV rays) can cause the melanocyte cells to become damaged, and they bundle together and move to the surface of your skin to form a dark spot. The same happens in response to serious skin injuries such as deep cuts and severe acne. In many cases, hyperpigmentation is exacerbated ...
... in women who use contraceptives.
Can I prevent hyperpigmentation?
In order to completely prevent hyperpigmentation, you should never expose your skin to any direct sunlight, but unfortunately, this is not really possible, as we would have to live like hermits. You can, however, take precautions by applying sunscreen with a very high SPF factor to the exposed parts of your body (and especially the face).
Can hyperpigmentation be treated?
The answer is yes. Nowadays, there are numerous beauty ingredients, and hyperpigmentation laser treatment that also can reduce the appearance of dark spots. Other options include chemical peels and facials that are specifically aimed at reducing pigmentation, but great success has so far been achieved with hyperpigmentation laser treatment.
Also, be on the lookout for products that contain the following ingredients:
• Products that contain Vitamin A such as retinol
• AHAs which are commonly found in exfoliating creams
• Ascorbic acid (also a form of Vitamin C) and
• Liquorice
How does hyperpigmentation laser treatment work?
In hyperpigmentation laser treatment, the affected skin area is treated using specialised and technologically advanced equipment with exceptional properties, to help correct dark coloured spots and age spots, and acne scars, which will result in a more visible and brighter complexion. The process is performed by an aesthetic practitioner and involves the use of a laser device that emits a ray of light onto the affected skin surface.
Hyperpigmentation laser treatment is extremely effective and although some people experience a feeling of discomfort during the treatment, it is nearly painless. The treatment usually takes between about 20 to 30 minutes, and is extreme cases, downtime will be a day or two, which means you can schedule an appointment for hyperpigmentation laser treatment over a weekend, and return to work on Monday morning.
Is the treatment safe?
If hyperpigmentation laser treatment is not performed correctly, it can burn the skin. The best advice in this regard is to have the treatment performed by a qualified dermatologist, aesthetic doctor, or certified laser treatment practitioner.
Because hyperpigmentation laser treatment also involves proper aftercare, it is extremely important that the treatment be performed by a trained person, and preferably at a well-established and recognised skin or laser treatment clinic that is properly equipped for the treatment. Therefore, you should do some research before you consider the treatment and be sure you opt for an approved CIBTAC Level 4 laser training centre.
