Pet owners normally understand that the animal they take in as a puppy or kitten becomes a lifelong responsibility. It is about much more than simply having a pet around for the good times, when the animal is young and playful and cute, when it is well and healthy.
Pets also need medical care, and an emotional bond with the owner too. Therefore we show the animal we love them, we make sure they are fed and have a home and place to rest, we take them to vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations, we make sure they enjoy every comfort we are able to offer them.
But we all know that life is not always easy and straight-forward, and this applies to our circumstances that impact our pets as well. Take, for example, the time when it is necessary for owners to go away from their home for a while and they have no-one to take care of the pet and its needs during their absence. Examples include when one must travel for work, or for holidays when taking pets with is not an option – or any other time that the pet is left behind during the owner’s absence.

The person that loves their pet will be worried for their animals’ safety and well-being when they leave town; therefore it is important to find the service that meets one’s requirements and expectations.
Some homework beforehand is always advised: look around your city or town for a good, highly thought of service in whose care you can leave your puppy, kitten or adult cat or dog during your absence, with the assurance, it will be looked after well, cared for and socialized with other animals if that is a requirement.
A good idea is to contact your vets in this regard too; a good service will certainly be able to tell you which services to contact as they have this information for their customers and clients. Being thus connected to a boarding service, especially if they are known to be a good, trusted service with experience and a great boarding facility for pets, ensures that the vet offers a much-needed service to the community as well during owners’ absence from home.
There will always be minimum requirements to look out for when an owner needs this service. Important questions that need to be answered satisfactorily in this regard include, for example:
• Is the facility safe? Can I trust the service not to let my cat or dog escape and allow harm to come to it? Has the facility had problems in this regard before?
• Where will my pet play and sleep? Is it afforded a warm, dry place with enough air circulating through? Are there clean blankets, or must an owner provide those?
• The owner wants to know everything about feeding: does the facility provide food or not? What about animals on a special diet because of health issues? What are the arrangements?
• Is it possible to keep pets of the same household in the same kennel if the owner wants that?
• Are dogs exercised and walked? Do cats have access to areas where they can play and climb in an enclosed space, so they do not escape?
It is important to consider the above – and even more – issues when you plan your trip away from home. Speak to the vets of your choice. They may be able to assist.
