Knowing The Difference Between Regular Cough And Chronic Cough
A regular cough is something that usually accompanies cold, or allergies caused due to seasonal changes. This type of cough requires little to no attention and usually goes away in a few days. But given the cautious times, you should consider taking an over-the-counter cough syrup to help you be at ease.
A chronic cough on the other hand comes with some or no symptoms, which makes it harder to identify. Even the use of your best cough medicine is not enough to get rid of a chronic cough. It is a situation to be worried about as it could mean something serious. With this article, we look at some of the most common ailments which may cause a chronic cough.
Asthma – Lungs have an important function of inhaling the oxygen and separating it from harmful toxins that might harm our body. Asthma is a condition which attacks and weakens the lungs, largely narrowing our airways which results in breathlessness and coughing. Although some cough remedies might help you feel better temporarily, asthma if left untreated can be problematic. Some people develop a condition known as the cough variant of asthma where coughs can turn ...
... into wheezing and cause extreme breathlessness.
Seasonal allergies – The seasonal changes cause an allergic reaction to almost everyone. The most common reaction is a cough followed by common cold. To reduce the effect of allergens on our body, lungs produce histamine. Histamine when produced in excess, causes cough and can usually cured with your regular cough syrup. Sometimes, our body cannot stop producing histamine, which may lead to a chronic cough.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – Also known as COPD, it is a condition that people develop due to excessive exposure to tobacco smoke and polluted air. To suppress the irritation caused due to smoke, our body produces mucus, which when produced in excess leads to blockage of our airways. Long-time exposure to smoke can make this condition chronic and the person could develop chronic bronchitis. Chronic conditions are severe, and they don’t clear away even if you use the best cough medicine. It requires a 180-degree change in your lifestyle.
Viral and bacterial infections – Infections caused due to viruses and bacteria usually lead to a common cold or a regular cough. During such infections a cough is your body’s reaction to the irritation caused to your airways or an attempt to expel the phlegm stuck in your throat. These conditions usually don’t require medical assistance and can be treated with your go-to cough remedies or an OTC cough syrup. A chronic cough could be a sign of an underlying condition, which in most cases is pneumonia. The most common and identifiable symptoms of pneumonia include coughing with green, yellow or bloody mucus, fever, chills, breathlessness, loss of appetite. If you exhibit any of these symptoms, even the best cough medicine won’t help you. Medical assistance is of paramount importance and if left untreated, may lead to death.
