Tata Car - Tata Indian Car Market
The journey has been long and tiresome for the Indian car maker, Tata Motors. Since its inception in 1945, Tata has seen a lot of good and bad days equally. Ultimately, what matters is that the automotive giant has moved on and has been successful in building the vast empire that it currently has control over. In this article, let's have a look at the Tata's market within the Indian car market; the cars it sells and also its journey in India.
Though established in 1945, Tata introduced the DI engines only in 1971 and its first commercial vehicle was manufactured in Pune, India only in 1977. It started manufacturing heavy commercial vehicles in 1983. Tata's first light commercial vehicle, Tata 407, was produced in 1986, followed by Tata 608. Gradually the Tatamobile 206 was produced.
Tata entered the passenger car segment in 1991 and launched the car Tata Sierra. The TAC 20 crane was also brought out on the Indian roads the same year and Tata celebrated the sale of one million vehicles in India. In 1992, Indians witnessed the launch of another Tata car on their roads, the Tata Estate. After enjoying the success ...
... of this car, Tata introduced the Sumo in 1994 and the new car became an instant hit on the India roads. Tata tasted enough success by then, and, in the same year the car maker collaborated with Daimler-Benz/Mercedes-Benz for manufacture of Mercedes Benz passenger cars in India.
The Tata Sumo Deluxe premiered on the Indian roads in 1996. The car maker did not stop with that launch and brought in the Tata Sierra Turbo the following year. Celebrations were on as the car maker rolled out its 100,000th Tata Sumo in the Indian car market in 1997. The Tata Safari car was introduced to the humpy-bumpy roads in India in 1998, but the car just did not mind the roads. It was time once again, this time for the rolling out of the 2 millionth vehicle in India. The currently very popular Tata Indica was launched in the same year.
By 1999, the Indian car market registered 115,000 bookings for the Indica and commercial production of the car started in full swing. As the 100,000th Indica rolled out, the second-generation Indica, the Indica V2 came on to the car market in 2001. Tata also brought in the CNG Indica and the Tata Safari EX. Also, the Indica V2 enjoyed popularity as India's number one car in its segment. More new cars from Tata found their way into the Indian car market. Post the beginning of the new millennium; Tata has launched various models in India and many variants of the existing models as well.
The Indian roads are now dominated by a host of vehicles from the country's very own auto giant. The Tata Indigo, Tata Safari, Tata Safari EXi Petrol, Tata SFC 407 EX Turbo, Sumo Victa, Indigo Marina, the Safari Dicor, the Indigo SX series which is the luxury variant of Tata Indigo, the Indica V2 Turbo Diesel and also the new Indigo range can be seen on the Indian roads in huge numbers.
The Sumo Grande is one car that combines the looks of an SUV with the comforts of a family car. Finally we had the world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano, being brought in by an Indian car maker. Apart from these, there were other launches like the Indigo MANZA, the FREELANDER 2 and the Sumo Grande MK II. Tata Motors still continues its reign in the Indian car market.
