What would a visit to South Africa be without a safari through the distinctive African bushveld? South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, bringing up images of the big five wandering wild in their natural habitat.

Get the most out of your 2010 FIFA World Cup trip with a unique African experience. Self-drive or guided safaris are available in most of the major wilderness areas, so check and decide on your preference.

One of the amazing features of South Africa is that you can find affordable accommodation in a city like Johannesburg, Pretoria (both in Gauteng), Rustenburg (North West) or Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape) and still be able to go on safaris that will include the 5 five. Finding accommodation is also very easy since a lot of websites are available to assist you when searching for and booking accommodation.

Options are numerous when it comes to safaris in South Africa. Check out some of the ones we recommend:

Phinda
Phinda Private Game Reserve features Africa's Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), endangered black rhino, and 415 bird species. Tucked away on South ...
... Africa's pristine and unspoilt northern KwaZulu-Natal coastline, Phinda offers a unique conglomeration of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest. While Phinda doesn't offer self-drive safaris, there are guided drives as well as boating trips.

Kruger National Park
The most famous of South African nature reserves, the Kruger National Park is a wildlife sanctuary larger in area than Israel. This incredible stretch of natural wilderness is home to a whopping 147 mammal species, including the Big 5. An excellent network of tarred and untarred roads throught the park allow for effortless self-drive safaris, with guided tours also available. The Kruger National Park offers unparalleled safari experiences, with a number of camps available in and around the park for any accommodation requirements. The Park is situated in a Malaria area, so if you are planning a visit, make sure you take the correct precautions for you and your family.

Pilanesberg
Situated adjacent to the world-famous Sun City, the Pilanesberg lies in the crater of an ancient, extinct volcano in the North-West Province. A mere two hours from Johannesburg, the Pilanesberg offers the ideal opportunity for a one-day, self-drive safari, or as a wonderful outing for those staying at Sun City. Camps are available inside the park for a real safari holiday, and guided tours are the ideal way to see the wildlife. A balloon ride over the African plains is the ideal complement to your safari, witnessing the beautiful scenery in the early-morning light. The Pilanesburg is in a Malaria-free area, making it the ideal destination for family safaris or day-trips.

Mabula Lodge
Only two hours North of Johannesburg, Mabula Lodge is undoubtedly one of South Africa's finest private game reserves. Set against the backdrop of lush green mountainous vegetation, this private reserve offers the perfect scenery for viewing the Big 5. Situated in a malaria-free area, Mabula is an intimate destination for a safari in which you will be well looked after. Mabula offers only guided game viewing, with expert and knowledgeable drivers.

Madikwe
Lying three hours' drive from Johannesburg, up against the border of Botswana in a Malaria-free area, Madikwe is one of the undiscovered gems in South Africa. Madikwe boats both the Big 5 and a large concentration of predators, making for excellent game viewing. However, self-drive and day visits are not an option - only guests of the lodge may enter the park.

Kwandwe
Situated deep in the Malaria-free Eastern Cape along the banks of the Fish River, Kwandwe's gorges provide the perfect habitat for wildlife. Offering not only the Big 5, Kwandwe is also home to a selection of rare and more seldom found wildlife. Guided safaris in the morning and evening will ensure that you have every opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and experience an authentic safari holiday.
