Mountain bikes, bicycles, scooters and the like are seen on roads every minute of the day whether you live somewhere in the UK, Amsterdam or Paris for that matter. Some are used for reasons of transport, to get people to and from work, for example, whereas others are acquired mainly for recreation.

Mountain bikes are a good example. It is the type of bike ideal for off-road activity, not meant for city roads. The mountain bike is, by its very nature, designed for rough, unequal terrain and meant to withstand the elements better than, say, a cycle for the track. There are different mountain bikes, different brands and different bikes, too, in terms of size, frame material and price.

Some people buy their mountain bike brand new whereas others are perfectly happy with a used bike. It boils down to preference, the reason you acquire your bike, and price. If the bike is meant purely for recreation, to relax out in the countryside, for off-road purposes, then it may not be necessary to buy the most expensive bike, it may not be necessary to opt for an expensive bike such as, say, a carbon-fibre choice. An aluminium ...
... or even older type may suffice. It depends on individual circumstances.

However, some prefer a much lighter and easier to handle bike; therefore they will choose carbon fibre. For many other mountain-bikers a cheaper version, such as one with an aluminium frame, is the answer. It is still sturdy and strong, can take the punch in rough terrain – and is cheaper.

Many people like buying their bike brand new. It is not necessarily everybody’s choice. Many thousands of used or second-hand bikes are being sold all over the world all the time. These sales take place informally between friends and family members, but by far most are done by shops and dealers – and more and more than ever before on the internet where some truly great suppliers and companies offer these second-hand bikes.

The best among them have websites that carry photographs of their bikes, the parts, wheels, frames and other accessories that may interest the mountain biker. The buyer can compare, look at sizes and brand names, wheels, frames and forks, depending on the website. This is a great way of shopping: you have all the choices in one place, i.e., the website.

Depending on the company you deal with, it may be possible to even sell your old bike when you purchase your mountain bike, either second hand or new. This will depend on the business and the requirements of the buyer. Most keen, experienced mountain bikers do have a bike that they may want to sell when it is time to upgrade to, for example, a newer bike, or a more expensive one made from, for example, carbon fibre. Individual circumstances will dictate, and so will the dealer one approaches.

It does not matter all that much since there are always choices – in terms of bikes, in terms of materials such as aluminium and carbon fibre and terms of price. Different dealers offer different bikes at different prices; the buyer can do some homework upfront before they decide. As opposed to a new bike with everything intact, older bikes sometimes need parts to be replaced, not even the whole bike. Once again, good suppliers and websites offer the biker the options so that you may order only the part you need and still keep your bike. Many options mean that everyone finds a solution.

Buying a bike, new or second-hand, offers the buyer enough options and most questions are answered satisfactorily: will I find a good bike, either new or second-hand; will I be able to find a buyer for my mountain bike when I upgrade; is it possible to part exchange my bike for another from a dealer? These are some issues that buyers may be concerned about. The quick answer is yes, you will find a dealer to assist you, either on the high street or online.
