Who wouldn't love to be a millionaire?

One million dollars may well appear to be a tremendous amount of money, yet having it isn't out of the question ─ the key is in intelligent investing.

However, before even thinking of investments, one HAS to begin by having savings. No savings directly indicates not having additional funds to make investments. It is quite possible to save up without budgeting, but drawing up a list of possible and probable expenditures for the month/year makes it less difficult to streamline your endeavours. All things considered, a spending budget is just a sum of funds put away for a specific purpose.

Then, how DO you draw up a spending budget?

The fundamental procedure of planning a budget entails listing your costs on a monthly basis and next deciding on an allocation of funds to represent what's valuable to you. Or, in financial speak, preparing a spending plan includes itemizing a predicted forecast of a person's income and expenditures anticipated for some period in the foreseeable future.

With the risk of being obvious, ...
... I would say, make sure you base your spending plan on priorities and logic, instead of impulses.

List the items you have decided to buy in the past two months, and then categorize all of these purchases under one of the next four categories: Vital, Important, Nice to Have, or Basically Worthless.

Here are several standard purchases, which you can use to commence your own record.

DVD Player

Eating out

Food

New Boat

Clothing

Brand name Clothing

Schooling

House Maintenance

Decorating

Retirement Nest Egg

A life insurance policy

Emergency Fund

Cost to Lessen Debt

Cellular phone & Service

Music Lessons

Renovating

Second Car

Child's School Expenses

Maybe your child has just obtained his/her driving licence, and you feel you absolutely had to buy a 2nd car. However, perhaps you could very well have put off buying it several months longer, or had them contribute, whether by a small amount, for it.

Similarly, did you absolutely need to eat at restaurants that often? Cooking, or eating in, is significantly cheaper, and would likely also save money on gas, aside from almost always being a healthier selection.

Redecorating is an additional road that could either make or break your spending budget. If you without question have to re-paint your walls, one fun (and cheap) way to do it, is to arrange a painting party and equip your friends with paint buckets, rollers and some aprons.

Either way, once you've determined if a particular purchase was vital, you'll have a better idea about budgeting in the future.

However, ALWAYS be careful of impulse buying. Be careful not to give in too much. Even several seemingly inexpensive purchases WILL tally up at the end of the month, wreaking havoc on your budget.

Using the above list as a basis, first allocate funds for purchases under the Vital header in your spending budget for the upcoming month. After that make certain there is some cash for the Important things. Only after you're certain those have been paid for should you expend money on Nice to Have things. Of course, don't squander funds on stuff under the Basically Worthless category.

If you want to save your money, as opposed to spend it, you will want o know more about a money market account, or an online savings account.
