You start picking up the clothes and realise this is going to take a lot of time than you expected. You will have to pick up the clothes, fold the unfolded ones, segregate them according to their type, occasion, or weather.
This one unplanned task has the capability to disrupt your entire day’s planning of personal events and work as none of them could be accomplished on time due to a half-hour delay. Instead, just pick up the clothes and move on with your tasks for that day. Why? Your question will be answered in our blog today.

Little tasks can disrupt your schedule
The scenario described above is a simple example of a “little task” that had the potential to rerail the tasks you had planned for the morning at least. The task would have postponed the sessions that you had planned forcing your brain to get rewired for the day which is more difficult than it sounds.
The moral here is, what seems like a small task can eat up your entire day or lead to a rabbit hole of wasted hours. A person needs the discipline to deal with such unforeseen events or diversions that can end up taking hours ...
... of your day. Remember that one email that you thought caused no harm in reading but instead you ended up checking 30 more without realising? Or the website that you just wanted to check but ended up surfing for two hours? Little tasks aren’t so little, are they?

How do you prevent getting involved in these little tasks?
Well for starters, begin planning your day and for that, you can use free time tracking applications that are available on your mobile. Following are the key points that you should keep in mind while creating your schedule: -
Important tasks first – Tasks that are essential should be prioritised by completing them first so that you are fully charged while doing them first. However, you cannot finish all important tasks in one day, hence, divide them throughout the week accordingly.
Single task – While multitasking may sound fascinating but it isn’t practical as you will end dividing your attention. Instead, complete one event at a time single-mindedly for better output and quality.
Stick to the schedule – When you make a to-do list, stick to it so that you get habitual to it. You can keep a track of your work through the free time tracking application we talked about earlier. This will make sure that your mind doesn’t wander to unscheduled tasks.
Keep your work area clean – By keeping your work area clean, you can give yourself a fresh start for the day instead of cleaning stuff. This will also ensure that you are not distracted from the things that are lying around you. Out of sight, out of mind!
Eliminate distractions – One of the major distractions for today’s generation is social media, hence, make sure that you switch off notifications or stay clear of social media while working on pivotal tasks and only use it during breaks. You can also plug in your earphones and listen to concentration music.
I hope I was able to answer all the questions you had in your mind at the starting of this blog, that is, why one should let go of small unplanned tasks and focus on the schedule made for the entire day. One does not have to pick up each and every task that catches your eye, instead, respect your schedule and show discipline in completing the tasks that are planned prior to them. Make time for the small tasks too but that should be either after you finish your to-do’s list or when you include it in your schedule, excluding emergencies of course.
The little tasks will still be there, waiting for you, unfinished.
