There can be little doubt that once people feel good about their appearance and how they present themselves to those around them, their spouses, their colleagues, and friends, they have more confidence in who they are and in their abilities.

First impressions often last, therefore people are aware of how they are perceived by others, even if it is only because of their appearance, but not only that: the moment you feel happy with your appearance, the easier it becomes to perform better and to ensure you show your best side to the world.

It often starts at the face and with the eyes. When we talk to others, we look at their eyes just as they look at ours. The area around the eyes is, therefore, often the focal point during the conversation, and regardless of how beautiful the other person’s eyes may be, when the lid or the area around the eye and its socket looks tired, or puffy, or unappealing, something goes amiss.

This is one of the most important reasons that individuals approach doctors and surgeons for help, which is often offered in the form of cosmetic surgery, the type of surgery to improve ...
... appearance. Cosmetic surgery to the area around the eyes is probably the most popular form of surgery to improve appearance. Some individuals ask for Botox to help them with wrinkles in the face and near the eyes, whereas thousands are looking to their surgeons to perform the well-known blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery – also called eyelift surgery.

This procedure is aimed at the person whose appearance will be improved so they look more youthful once more and, therefore, feel better about themselves. For others, this procedure is advised for medical, or functional, reasons for example when the upper lid droops or sags so badly that one’s vision is interfered with.

These procedures are performed by specialist doctors who often start as eye specialists such as ophthalmologists and who then proceed to offer cosmetic surgery too. The area around the eyes is sensitive, therefore surgeons that perform any surgeries in this area receive special training to make sure they offer their patients the best.

The eyelid lift, the blepharoplasty, is done to improve appearance, to rejuvenate, to help patients look better, and no longer have to show tired-looking eyelids and puffy skin to the world. The procedure is performed to remove old, excess skin and fatty deposits that have accumulated in the eyelid – especially the lower lid – over the years.

The surgeon makes a small incision in the affected lid, removes old skin and fat, even excess muscle, and then with the tiniest of stitches makes sure the procedure is completed. Because this procedure is not very invasive, it is often performed in the surgeon’s rooms under local anesthesia, and sometimes with stronger sedation, depending on the patient. This is discussed between the surgeon and patient before surgery commences.

At times the blepharoplasty is performed on both the upper and lower lid during the same procedure, even if that is less common. In these instances, the surgery will take longer than a single procedure would. Patients can expect to leave after the small operation in as little as 45 minutes, or up to 3 hours if both lids are operated on. It will depend on individual circumstances, and the surgeon explains all of this to the patient beforehand.

Because of individual needs some patients may need less invasive procedures than others. For example, when no skin is removed in the lower lid, the surgeon will perform what is known as a transconjunctival blepharoplasty on the lower lid. This will depend on the severity of sagging skin, for example.

The experienced surgeon understands all these options and will, therefore, inform the patient of which blepharoplasty may be best for them. It is always important to approach those surgeons – as one would with any other professional service – known for their knowledge, their experience, and the expertise they offer when this type of surgery is considered.
Fortunately, there are some truly good ones around whether you live in London, in New York, or in Amsterdam. These professionals may just be the ones to make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself.
