7 Ways To Make Maths Relevant For Kids - Swiflearn

Mathematics is the only subject that we use in our day-to-day life though many students struggle with mathematics. It’s important to create a healthy relationship with mathematics since it’s one of the subjects that go with students for a lifetime right from simple calculations to solving complicated algorithms. Kids have a habit of understanding colors and graphs and figures easily as compared to whiteboard formulas and boring lectures.
Unfortunately, Our education system was designed in a way that where students had an opportunity to learn subjects with colors and graphics they have to note down notes given by their teacher but things have changed recently since online coachings came into the picture and the involvement of multi-media makes subjects easier for students to learn and teachers to explain.
“Arthimophobia – The fear of numbers” is a silent poison and many psychologists have discovered theories that it’s one of those symptoms that kids fear to share with their parents and competitions, pressure from mentors, the burden from family to perform well will make it more worst. However, with the ...
... advancement in technology, and with easier study methods there are ways from which you can make maths relevant for your kids. So let’s proceed further and discuss how can we make mathematics relevant for students.
• STEM & CODING
STEM & Coding are the most popular way of teaching mathematics to your kids. Many Online Websites offer coding classes that involve mathematics and along with that, they are making kids future-ready. Mathe can be gamified with coding and students can learn easily and can have hands-on practice with formulas and equations.
• Involve Money Management
If there is one math skill that a kid should be good at it should be mastering their money wisely. Kids can easily start with basic mathematical problem solving like adding or subtracting their pocket money or how much money they are left with. Kids love to talk about money since it’s associated with their dreams therefore it’s a must-have skill and parents can help to easily involve money management for their kid’s future and make maths more relevant.
• Teaching Students to Ask Questions
You must teach your kid to ask frequent questions from their mentor no matter how many times or does not matter how basic the question is since the basic questions can be a root to build the base for the child and can help them understand the concepts well. Asking questions will also enhance their mental ability to imagine the possibilities.
• Promote Problem Solving Strategies
A problem can be solved in various ways and if you are teaching this to your kid it will help them in the future to take maths as an easy subject like the involvement of Vedic Maths or using theorems and formulas wisely. If the problems are not taken as problems but a challenge by parents to their kids they can take it as a motivational factor and can try harder to solve the problem which can help them get rid of Arthimophobia amongst students.
• Incorporate Graphs, Tables, and Charts
Nothing can help your kid learn better If there is the involvement of charts tables or graphs. It’s a human tendency to remember and learn through colors, pie charts, graphs, and Images. Many mathematical chapters require the use of them and the more we use them in their exercises the more comfortable they will be solving the questions. Help them learn which includes the right amount of information which are accurate and relatable.
A team of researchers from Massachusetts University has done a survey and concluded that graphs and tables with the right information, when added to the curriculum kids, tend to remember the topic 68% more accurate and remember above 300% on average in terms of tenure therefore it’s a must to keep them where necessary.
• Video Story Questions
In the world of Multimedia pretty much everyone has a mobile phone handy. Do you know that your mobile phone can help your kid beat math anxiety? Yes, it can and it’s a very simple process e.g. you go to a local store to buy groceries, and while picking toiletries or daily objects you can record them through your phone which can help your kids understand basic mathematics like additions multiplications, and subtractions. This may sound little awkward but elementary schools in many countries have separate problem-solving classes through Videos since they know the importance of Videos in remembering topics.
• Regular Performance Assessments
After trying all the above steps it’s necessary for a brief performance assessment of kids with their parents around so that both of them know where exactly they stand and on which topics and methods they have to work on. A few corrections may help students to get rid of the topics they fear learning.
Good Luck!
